Suburbs?

Can anyone tell me anything about Merriwa and Clarkson? We have been looking at properties to buy there and they are very reasonably priced and very lovely homes.
Hoping to emigrate in April and rent for 6 months and then possibly buy.

What would you like to know?

I have sold heaps of houses in both Clarkson and Merriwa throughout the last 10 years; I also saw fit to purchase an investment property in Merriwa too which i used to lease out for many years as a rental. Both Clarkson and Merriwa are older suburbs north of the river; and both have come in for more than their fair share of stick over the years.

Merriwa used to cruelly be called Balga by the Sea which was most unfair as i am sure people living in Merriwa will agree. It did have a very bad reputation in the early years but as is the case with anywhere else........... there are good and bad pockets in most suburbs. Merriwa has cleaned up its act........... prices are still relatively cheap and it is close to everything.

Both suburbs are very reasonably priced although Somerly prices have gone through the roof of late. There are plenty of Homes West houses in both suburbs (council houses) which could have an adverse affect in the surrounding areas as Homes West houses have some sort of stigma attached to them.......... once again mostly unfair as there is good and bad in everything and its only a small percentage of bad tenants that spoil it for everyone else.. I often come across not so nice people who are renting privately ........... or who are actual vendors. I used to live in a Council House too and it never did me any harm?

Upon my recommendation one of my sons and his girlfriend are currently building in Clarkson.......... albeit in the posh part of town named Somerly.

What sort of budget will you be on........... do you have children as that is important re you being in the catchment area for good schools?

Hi Thanks for reply and the info. We have 2 children - age 5 and 14 months. We are looking to buy something for around 400,000 AUD. We are going to book a holiday home for the first few weeks or so when we arrive and then possibly rent for 6 months. Then hope to buy. But this is just speculation, we won't know til we get there. We have looked at other suburbs as well. Can you suggest some good ones. My Husband is not going to look for work until we get there cos he wants to have a couple of months off. He is a mechanical fitter. It all seems so up in the air, we do need info on good schools as well.

Please reply soon.
