I am probably a bit biased (as I was brought up in Sydney's suburbs!) but I think it is a WONDERFUL place to grow up. Beaches, outside play at least 10 months of the year, sports, good schools, bush, BBQs and swimming .... I could go on ;-)

I grew up on the Northern Beaches and from here, by car in peak hour, you would be looking at a 45min commute, which is pretty standard for Sydney. There are no train lines out our way but the schools are great, the beaches are a few minutes away and there are lots of other Pom's around :-)

I would also suggest the North Shore (either Lower North Shore if you have loads of cash, Upper North Shore if you have a suitacse full) as you can easily catch the train into North Sydney. Good schools up this way but further from the beach (you can see where my priorites lie ;-) )

I would be happy to answer any specific questions you might have it would help, worth checking out a few of the rental agencies to get an idea of what you can afford on your DHs new wage.

Hope this helps

Michelle

We are in the same situation - cant figure out where, though as we have no children schools and things arent an issue, though we certainly dont have loads of cash. We are trying to find somewhere nice for under $500 per week. The commute isnt an issue for me as i work in mining away from home for two weeks at a time, and my wife will look for work close to where ever we end up. Let me know how you get on.
