building own home

Has any one built their own home? if so is there any information you can give me. oh is a builder and we want to build our own house if we can. rach

Theres been a post about this before and for the life of me I can't find it. I only remember that they were in the exact same situation as you as their OH was a builder. They got to Oz and found that the materials could not be bought anywhere near as cheap as the building companies get them cos they buy in bulk so even with the saving of other halfs labour it was going to cost more and take longer to do it themselves. I think they decided to get a company in to do the majority of the build and they dropped all the finishing off the price of the property. Then the OH just did the finishing tiling, flooring, paving etc, etc.

Dunno if that helps - it may even have been a certain rival site the post was on - just cant seem to find it sorry

Paul is in the building trade and we are building a house...Well a builder is going to do it..I dont think rules allow you to do it unless you have done an owner builder course...It is much easier and just as cost effective to have a building company do it..Ours will hopefully go up within 9 weeks from start to finish..Wont be till Feb but I cant wait!!!!

thanks jo usefull info. also said before to oh it might be just as cheap to get a another builder to do it. but has not listened to me yet.

hi jo,
I am a small building contractor - one off houses, extentions, loft conversions etc in manchester and we have finally decided to make the move to oz. i was just wandering how your OH has found it over there. Getting work etc and pay as opposed to cost of living. my OH is a midwife but would like to take a break from work when we get there .- is this possible on a tradies wage. I am quite willing to work on the tools and let someone else have the headaches till I get my bearings. sorry I have so many questions. just wandering if you could answer some
