Hi
We'd be interested to hear peoples comments on this area too. We've been looking at Warnbro, Waikiki, Safety Bay - the house prices seem very reasonable, but I'd love to know why!! Everything I've read about these area seems to be positive, but the cynic in me asks 'what's the catch??'
Have you looked on Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au and also www.movetoperth.com - we've found them quite useful, but what we'd really like to know are peoples personal opinions on the area.
Hopefully a 'local' will reply with lots of useful info...
Bye for now
Jo

Hi,
For info The Rockingham area is loaded with expat poms and has a a freeway which takes about 40 minutes to Perth, train line opens b4 Chrissy and is just generally a nice place to live. Close to the city but not to close (no smog and lower costs).
Without trying to sound to commercial actually have a house for sale 4 bed 2 bath family meals games and luounge 2 car garage, air conditioned, floors and window treatments, etc, all brand new, gardens done etc in Secret Harbour which is a suburb just south of Rockingham, near the coast, new area etc etc.
Feel free to ask for any info on the area as and any help and ideas

Hi Brendan
So, the big question is... what's your house up for? or are you auctioning? Secret Harbour looks lovely, but I think the prices are a little out of our reach unfortunately.
Bye for now

We are in a dilemma at the moment my heart says Cairns but because of job prospects for hubby my head says Perth.
We have looked closely at the areas surrounding Rockingham and come up with Warnbro have researched it and have heard no complaints only good stuff.
We have 2 secondary school age boys and it is close to a great school at Safety Bay, great swimming clubs and football clubs and close to great beaches and within easy reach of Perth and Rockingham.
It may not be my first choice but I sure I can make do it wont be hard i'm sure
Our first priority is to go where the work is and for my hubbies job perth are paying big $$$$$ and its a chance to walk straight into work and develop his aussie resume.
I can always have a holiday home in Cairns.
As I say we are not 100% sure yet but huuby is more and more convinced that Perth may just be the place to be for a while.

rockingham
hi all
sorry don't live there yet but have been twice on holiday. we stayed in port kennedy which is about a 10 min drive from rocky we spent a lot of time on the front at rockingham as the beach and surrounding area is lovely and clean . our daughter was 8 last time we went and just adored being able to play on the park which is just on the foreshore .(i was happy as it wasn't covered in glass or everything broken as we get here at home) our best memory of rockingham is the new year celebrations they had bands and a firework display at midnight and there were lots of families there enjoying themselves and we didnt see any trouble . houses around the area seem to be cheaper than nor dont know why as it is a nice area. we would like to settle that way but will depend on husband traveling to work nor. i use real estate .com and aussie move to check out housing (sorry don't know how to post web addresses).
hope this helps

Sorry.................. Perth's full Kaye; you'll have to go to Cairns.
Our kid has his house on the market in Cairns............ he's been there roughly 3 years. He says Cairns is okay............ but 3 years is long enough. He's a crane driver on the mines over in Nhulanbhoy and he does FIFO............8 days on........ 6 days off.

Rockingham Area
Hi all,
Rockingham is about half way between Perth and Mandurah and situated on the coast. Just north of Rockingham is an industrial area of Kwinana (chemicals, grain shipments etc using the safe harbouring area created by the islands just off the coast). Go back about 7-20 years and it was mainly cheaper housing. You'll see some of that still reflected in areas like Medina and Orelia.
With the surge in house prices all coastal surburbs have found favour with Rockingham, Saftety Bay, Shoalwater, Port Kennedy probably to a lesser extent included. The main Rockingham beach area is currently undergoing redevelopment with a number of high rise (expensive) apartments being built. Compared with some of the new areas further south towards Mandurah like Secret Harbour, Madora and areas around the estuary at Mandurah (Halls Head) many of the areas around Rockingham are still relatively cheap. Like most of WA prices tend to go up very close to the coast and escalate as soon as water is visible.
The commissioning of the southern train line before Xmas will be a major benefit to the area and the work to extend the freeway southward from where it currently ends near Baldvis (about due east from Shoalwater) will remove some of the traffic from the area.
Many years ago Rockingham and Shoalwater (think decades) were beach side holiday areas for Perth people. Some of the older houses have that 'beach shack' appearance.
You have an area that has some old, very often well place houses near the coast. Some cheaper developments 7-20 years old and some newer houses springing up with redevelopment. ie housing can be quite variable. It's also a bit too flat for my taste, but because it's near the coast means you get to beat a lot of the summer heat.
A little inland from this area are a number of newer surburbs (last 5 or so years) like Baldivis (there are also some bigger blocks - 2000-10000sqm in this area). Advantage of these newer areas include standard of development (parks, layout etc) and often the quality of the surrounding houses....means the surburb tends to look a bit nicer. (it's also a bit hilly and can give some nice eastward views to the Darling Range)
It's only one view but I hope this helps.
S
ps: Just in case you are wondering. One sister has lived in Mandurah (Halls Head area) for the last 20 years, oldest daughter lives in Baldivs (Settlers Hills), a friend is building a house in Madora, another one owns in Shoalwater. I live in Como (next to South Perth) but am moving to Denmark (400km south of Perth - cool & greener) next year. Parents in law live in Bunbury (100km south of Mandurah). I drive through this area far too often.
