Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane are not cheap, many regional areas are significantly cheaper, but not necessarily long way from cities., e.g. Victoria Warnambool, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Bairnsdale etc. and SE and South Coast NSW Albury/Wodonga, Batemans Bay, Ulladulla, Bega, Narooma etc. Other benefit with these samller cities are easier to get into the local community.
Big city prices make Adelaide (and Hobart) attractive cities, and versus regional QLD, e.g. Townsville, Cairns etc., personally think better option i.e. Adelaide working city of 1 mill (versus transient retirees etc. in QLD), temperate Mediterranean climate and more liberal or less red neck :)
