renting before moving to Oz

My husband and I are moving to Victoria in August and I have been e-mailing real estate agents to ask about the possibility of renting a property for 6 months. Also, to arrange the rental so it is waiting for us when we get there to cut down on hotel bills etc. The replies I have had back have not been encouraging, ie; that they will put us on their books but no promises. Is what I'm asking for not possible do you think?

I'm sure it is possible, but people like to deal face to face with you, rather than doing business like this by email, or even telephone calls. With a steady stream of people wanting to rent property, they don't need the hassle of dealing with someone in another country, and in a different time zone.

Best wishes,

Koala

Thank you for that. I am worried about arriving in Australia and having to live in a hotel for several weeks until we can get a rental property sorted

Motels are the cheaper option, and top quality compared to UK hotels (unless you're talking top class and expensive).

If you make an appointment or visit any reputable real estate agent who deals in rentals, and provided they've got something suitable, it can be fixed up within 24 hours.

They'll advise you of the suburbs, and amentities, schools etc too. Bear in mind that you'll need to organise things like bedding, cutlery, crockery, kettle and all necessities - even furnished rentals (if you can find any) don't come equipped with these.

Koala, thank you for your reply. I was wondering whether or not to take my crockery with us - it is nice Denby stuff but I was thinking to buy new out there. But maybe it would be best to send it on ahead together with other necessities so when we arrive it is there waiting for us.

Don't suppose you know how long, on average, it takes to buy a property? We'll obviously need to get jobs first before we can take out a mortgage.

Your shipment is not allowed to arrive in Oz before you do. We shipped our stuff so that it arrived the same day we did, it took 2 weeks to come through customs by which time we'd found a rental so had it delivered the day after we moved in. Personal experience I'd say ship everything !!

Buying a property can be fast. Once you submit an offer subject to finance and it's accepted, it's legally binding. Finance can come through in a week and you can move in four weeks after or even sooner if the paperwork goes through quickly. The settlement date is also set when you submit the offer so none of the stress you get in the UK.

Thank you. As we live in Scotand we are used to a fairly convoluted system of buying and selling, so Australia will be a breath of fresh air!

Peninsula Pom is on a distinguished road
Hi Louise; lots of options available but as usual, it does come down to price and where you wish to reside. We rented in Mornington for 2 months until our stuff got here and then stored it in the double garage of the place we were renting. Worked out fine and the couple that rented us the place arranged everything whilst we were still in the uk. If the Peninsula is acceptable to you I'm sure I could dig out some details for you to look into. Let me know but good luck anyway. Best wishes Kate
