On our trip however, we will be having 5 days in Sydney, then the idea was to hire a car and drive down the coast road to Melbourne, with a possible stop overnight half way (possibly Canberra??). The thing is, we have no idea how long this is likely to take. So the question is, does anyone out there have any idea on how long this will realistically take, and of course, any tips and things not to miss along the way would be very welcome!

      thanks in advance!

      Hi Paul

We stopped off at Jarvis Bay which is about a 2 - 2 1/2 drive from Sydney. I would highly recommend stopping here. It's a lovely little town with gorgeous beaches . I can definatley reccommend Hymas Beach - lovely crystal white sands. We drove to Canberra where we spent the night and then flew to Melbourne.

Hope this helps - happy travels!

Hi people. Thanks again for all your help.
      I thought i'd update you all as i have wi-fi !!!

The wife (terri) nearly had kittens and we'd only got far as Heathrow. I had to go off and have a body scan for some reason. And while i was away doing that, i was having a good laugh with the security guy. On our way back to Terri he suggested we have a laugh with her. He told her that i failed the scan and wouldn't be flying!! Hilarious, obviously not for Terri!!

So, anyway, we flew with Korean air, which were very good. Polite, very friendly, very recommendable if anyone is looking at flights. So, an 11 hour flight to Korea, stop for 5 hours and another 9.5 hours to sydney. It didn't go too badly as we booked the emergency exit seats from Heathrow. The extra legroom cerainly does help, especially being 6 foot!
The only trouble is, is that i can never seem to be able to sleep on a plane. A very good selection of films helped out.
Very daunting prospect arriving at Sydney, you realise how far away you are from blighty. Making the move will be tough for sure.
So we got the tbus from the airport to the cbd for $14 each which was pretty good.
Hotel's nice (Radisson) had a swim to help with the relaxation, now it's time for lunch!!

That's the lot for now, i'll update later in the week.
      Thanks for reading,
      Paul and Terri.

Hi folks. Well, here's an update.
We collected our car from hertz on William street in Sydney, not the cheapest, but they're fairly new, clean cars, and sat nav is an option, mainly for getting out of Sydney and into Melbourne.
In actual fact, getting out of Sydney was very easy, didn't really need sat nav, straight on to the eastern distributor and on the princes highway.
The road trip has begun !!
We decided to try and stop as much as we could, as we had two nights to do the journey. The first sign we saw was mt keira, so we thought we'd take it. We were so glad we did, because the view from up there was absolutely incredible.
Definitely worth the 10 minutes detour.
Back on the road, the next place we saw was Berry, and their 'world famous' donut van! A few k's down the road, the thing you want is a coffee and some donuts!! Very nice!!
Further down the princes highway, the scenery is breathtaking, forest views, farming fields, plains, it's all there. This is what i'd flown 10,000 miles for, my trip of a lifetime, and boy is it worth it, every hour i'd worked to get here.
We continued on to Bateman's Bay, a lovely little village, plenty of motels and restaurants. We booked ourselves into Zorba's motel. Friendly, comfortable and reasonably priced. We ate at starfish restaurant, which was excellent. Beautiful fish and a beer!!

That's it for now, more later, this is a wonderful journey so far!!
