Melbourne to Brisbane
Hiya we have been in Melbourne for over 2 years now and was feeling settled then hubby got offered a job in Brissy which he didn't accept, but we did go and do a reccie and really liked it so we decided to take the plunge and move, hopefully in next few months. We are looking at Cleveland/ Thornlands.
I am just worrying about the kids now though as when we came to Melbourne they repeated a year to be with the same age group, but after looking into schools in Brissy have seen that they will go back to what they would be in UK, so they will have lost a years education after repeating a year. My son wiil 14 next May and is currently in yr7 and my daughter is 12 next March and currently in yr 5. I just wondered if anyone knows could I keep them in those yrs or would they be a lot older than class mates??? as in Melbourne alot of Aussies hold them back a year anyway
sorry for rambling on I hope someone can help
thanks

They will be very old for year group. My son was 14 in June and is in Year 9. Youngest 10 in December and will go into Year 5 in January.

Thats what I was worried about, but I think my son would stuggle academically missing a year out, I think my daughter would catch up quickly though

Yes, they would be old for their years, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. We have friends who recently moved up from Victoria - their son is in grade 9 with my daughter but his birthday is also in May and he is already 15. He has fitted in socially without a problem.
Your daughter could probably cope with moving up the year. When we moved from NSW part way through the year, my daughter went from being in year 6 in NSW to year 7 here - effectively skipping a whole year of schooling. It has not been a problem at all and she soon caught up.

Thanks Rudi, how old is your daughter in year 9? and do a lot of people hold them back a year in Brisbane?
My son always struggled in UK with school work, but here in Melbourne because he repeated a year hes not doing too bad although he really doesn't like school hes more interested in sport and been outdoors.
Thanks

Hi Harry
My daughter has just turned 14 in year 9. She is in the correct year for her age. She has friends who have already turned 15 though and a couple more will before the end of the year.
I know a number of kids who have been held back a year in school. It is so common to do this! If you feel it would benefit your son to remain back a year then I think it will be the right thing to do. To be honest, once they are at school, I don't think they really focus on the age thing too much.
I think your focus will e to find a school that can embrace his love of sport as well as give him a decent education.
Good luck!
Love
Rudi
