Melbourne to Brisbane

Hi there

We are currently living in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne (moved here from Scotland) but are considering moving to Brisbane. We love Melbourne and all it has to offer so for us it's more about the climate than the place.

Anyone moved from Melbourne to Brisbane, and if so, how do the cities compare and of course the weather? We are planning to have a trip up to Brisbane later in the year, which is more than we did coming to Melbourne, but it's a little easier to do a reccie when you live in the country already

Thanks for that. Yes I suppose Melbourne could be likened in some ways to the UK, the Melbourne winter is a bit like a Scottish summer! Will no doubt have some more questions, just wondered how people compare the 2 cities.

Thanks

Hi Rubiks

Just been up to Brisbane for a week. Drove up taking 2 days (allow 24 hours if you have kids). Fuel for us in a Holden Astra cost about $217 to get back to Melbourne and still had half a tank! Didnt calculate going up but assume we spent approx the same.

We too think Melbourne is okay but the winter weather isnt up to much. Must say though the beaches and sea on Mornington are fab compared to Caloundra and Gold Coast as they are very rough with waves and the little ones have to be watched. There may be calmer waters but we didnt come across them as we didnt have much time. We were in shorts and t shirts and swimming in the water! Came back here and its bloody nithering!!

Loved Brisbane city and the South along pacific Motorway Shailer park area to be precise. Loved Coomera and the GC hinterland but need accessibility hence the motorway location. Only 30 mins from City or GC. Not tourist season but i would hate to be in the GC when it was as sooooo busy.

Brisbane city has a very holiday feel to it with bars in the middle of Queen Street Mall. You can catch the River Cat and use your train tickets to cover all the transport.

Streets Beach fantastic plus FREE as are all the swimming pools we came across.

Anyway apart from the Cane Toads all is good there as far as i can see. Just got to sell our house and get up there.

Sorry to all that love Melbourne but you are welcome to it i much prefer milder weather all year round and yes even the 3 or 4 months of absolute unbearable torturous humidity. I came to Oz for a reason and that was to feel i was in Oz but in Melbourne i feel i may as well be back in Yorkshire freezing me .... off!!!

Get yourselves up there and see for yourselves i would be suprised if you didnt like it

Brisbane CBD compared to Melbourne is a dump so if you're looking at living in the middle of the city I wouldn't move there personally.

I actually like the seasons in Melbourne, I think it has a more mediteranen/European rather than UK feel. Certainly with the large number of greeks & italians.

You need to consider the employment options when moving (assuming you're still working), wage rates will be lower in Brisbane and depending on what you do you may not find work quite as easily.

Having said that there is a large amount of migration of Ozzies from VIC to QLD, part of that is the 'miami factor' though with people retireing to the better weather.

Thanks Georgie and Pinhead for those replies.

We have already looked into the employment opportunities and things seem ok on that front, also a chance that my OH could transfer with his current job. We have children so wouldn't be looking to stay in the city, but wondered what kind of things there are to do socially, tourist attractions etc?

There is always plenty to do in Melbourne, and the beaches here are fine for what we are looking for, but as I said before it's more about the weather. The seasons here are lovely, but like Georgie we moved away from Scotland for a milder climate, and where Melbourne is nowhere near as cold as what we left behind it's cold enough for me to need my coat on now. Of course we looked into the weather etc before we moved here, just didn't count on it being bl**dy freezing INSIDE the house!!! Ducted heating....bah.........I want my radiators back

Not sure also how we'll cope with it getting dark early in Queensland, the long summer nights here are lovely and OH enjoys catching the last couple of hours of sun sitting out with a glass of red wine, don't think he'll be doing that after work in Brisbane, well unless he finishes at 3pm.

Thanks again for your comments

Hi Rubiks
As it get dark here in Melbourne at the height of summer around 9 pm then i would assume Qld would get dark about 7 pm as they have no daylight savings, Brisbane seems to get dark about an hour earlier than us here so i guess you would have to take off 2 hours in the summer time.
Still a couple of hours before beddibyes! I found we got up early as to enjoy the daylight hours and it was natural to do so, not forced. You would get used to the dark evenings and enjoy a BBQ by lamplight.

Just depends if youre an early riser or not though
I am dying to see if you like it though so let us know
Georgie
