Hairdressing courses

Hi
Has anyone done the Cert III at the Brisbane School of Hairdressing (or the Gold Coast School0? Has anyone just gone and done it at the TAFE college instead? What would your recommondation be as the TAFE is cheaper and you get the holidays during school times whereas the BS of H sayd you should not take holidays and is more expensive. By the way i am not having to pay international fees which is a godsend.'
Any help would be appreciated.
Georgie

im a hairdresser of 9 yrs and i feel the tafe is the best as ,yes ya get holidays, it's cheap and ya learn the same things.BUT, the only thing i could say that is different is ya prob going to be in a more funky and up-dated schoo for learning at the BS OR SURFERS SCHOOL .for eg: i walked in off the street into the school at southport(surfers paradise) to get my hair done and thought it was more like walking into a salon.........and it was cheaper and same service!that was just as a customer!
if it was my choice all over again? i would do the tafe WHY? cause ya know that the Tafe is cerificate certified by the hairdressing standards. im not saying the bs or the s s is not certified but the tafe is goverment funded and ya get what ya pay for.

well hope to have helped and let me know what ya choose ,cause i would love to hear bout it!
good luck
leanne.

Cheers for that leanne,
Still pretty expensive at TAFE (approx $9 -10 k) BSof H is about $14 K. I know what you mean about funkier learning but i wont be bothered with all that stuff as long as i get to learn. Better to get some hols as well cos of the scholl hols.I notice you are in labrador (used to have a black one LOL ha ha ha...) We are considering the Gold Coast over Brissie and will be checking it out at the beg of June. Do hairdressers generally get paid crap money up there then?? I have been told it is but i want to do something arty that i might enjoy so i thought why not give it a go!
Bye I will let you know what i do but not moving up for at least 5 months as got to sell house in Mellie yet.

they do split payments,so ya can pay it over the 1st yr.but just ask in case im wrong and i have't been to tafe in while?!!!!!
i'll be working in a salon in june that is just opening and i'll be on $17hr approx 36hrs before tax = approx $600.
just a word of warning that h/dressing is very bitchy and ya are required to do thurs night and sat's and some or all sunday if the salon is open. if ya have children,as im not sure how old ya are!(ha ha ha ) ya may have better luck getting them off as they are more important.
some bosses are great and some salons but it is just luck with that!
i gave up hairdressing for a bit cause my heart was not in it and i was missing it heaps and this is my first job back since giving it up. my point is once ya learn it ya don't forget it, but one thing ya need to do is keep up with the trends! ya prob thinking but peoples hair styles don't change much? and ya right it's just the industry the thinks that unless ya work in a classey salon. one that the customers are bout the hair(ha ha ha ) all bout image and style
i enjoy doing all the new stuff but not every day.
any more ? just ask
cheers
leanne

Leanne you've put me off now!!! I have heard someone else say that hairdressing is a bitchy job too. Why is that? Is it cos they're all usually girls together as usually that is a recipe for bitching. I hate bitches but like a gossip. So is it more a gossipy thing or just downright bitchiness? I cant cope with nasty people as i am quite a sensitive soul and get upset fairly easily. maybe i should look at doing something else??

$17 per hour is rubbish isnt it? I assume you would really have to enjoy it and i am just wondering now....

Thaks for being honest.

Hi Fraggles,

Have you any advice!??

Me and my family are moving to, GC, Coombabah/ biggera waters,/lab area. in Oct 2008. Our eldest son is 19, and has held NVQ level 2 in hairdressing since he was 16, he was barbering at 15 in mens salon, he also has NVQ level 3 in Barbering.
Is there any advice that i can pass on to him, any shoulds or shouldn'ts. How are UK stylists viewed.
He s dead laid back about the move but as a mum i just want to be prepared.

Any help you or any one else would be great
