Cannot do citizenship for them as I only acquired my citizenship through descent. If I had been born in Australia it may have been different. I spoke to Australia House and the rules are now that both my husband and daughter have to live in australia for 2 years permanent before gaining citizenship. That is why we are applying for a permanent spouse visa for him. Ciara was born in England as well.
Would you recommend the area that you are moving to?

that's still so weird.. i wasn't born there.. i got my aussie citizenship from my dad who swore me in as I was only 13 when we moved to brisbane from england and if you were under 15 your parents swore you in (think that's changed now?). Both my husband and I are naturalised citizens.. and I got citizenship via the post for both my children. so strange that they are making you apply for visas for both yourself and your child.. esp your child.. am amazed at that! my kids have never been to australia yet.. this will be their first trip ever. perhaps it's something to do with when you became a citizen not how.. i think things changed after 1984 ish.. i became a citizen in 1983 so perhaps that's it? but am stunned your daughter requires a visa! she should get her citizenship through i thought?? oh well guess you've spoken to them so they know what they are talking about..

re that area of brisbane.. yes highly recommend it! i grew up in that area mt gravatt, magregor, wishart, holland park, all those suburbs. i went to school in mt gravatt and macgregor and it's very very nice place to live.. garden city (the big shopping centre) is really nice with massive cinima complex, water falls, irish pubs, cafe's out side etc. etc. so lovely. huge library there too and every shop you'd ever want. 10 min to the center of brisbane, museums, art galleries, city beach/south bank/butterfly house and only 1 hour to gold coast down the free way.. or you can go 1.5 hours up and drive up into the goldcoast hinterlands to the rainforest and rolling green hills (it's very wet and moist up there.. very english looking with farms, lovely b&bs and cows in the fields etc.. then a huge huge rainforst with walk ways up high etc.. amazing views! and usuall a few degrees cooler than the rest of brissie as it's so high up so great on a hot day). I wouldn't live in the sticks for any money in the world.. probably becuase i live in the countryside now in ireland and it sucks! can't wait to get bact to civilization!!! shops, coffee shops, playgrounds, museums.. agh.. place to take the children!! first weekend we are back we're driving up to the sunshine coast and plonking our bums on a beach.. to defrost!!!

You are right, the rules did change. Mum got me my citizenship in 1987, but she wasn't able to get my brother and sister their's as they were 21 and 19 at the time. Mum was only allowed to get for her children under the age of 18. I was 16 at the time. That is also why I think Australia House are saying that Ciara cannot get automatic citizenship because of the time I got my citizenship.

I must say that the area of mt gravatt, magregor, wishart, holland park, sounds great.
Must have a look into it more. I take it there are good schools around there? Is it an expensive area for houses etc?

well MacGregor, Robertson, Wishart have expensive houses.. Mt Gravatt is quite an old area.. so the houses aren't as expensive but it depends which area you look at.. for example there is a massive hill/mount thing.. called Mt Gravatt and the suburb around it is called Mt Gravatt and Upper Mt Gravatt.. if you go up the hill the houses are reallly flash and expensive.. further you go down the hill into the older area they are cheaper. It's all so central though.. that's the great thing about it. you have the express way (freeway) on one said that runs to the gold coast and the city and logan road which is massive and runs right the way across the south east.. you can get pretty much anywhere from those suburbs there with either bus, train or car.. it's very userfriendly. the school.. well Lorietto College is not far from there (Private girls catholic school) and Brisbane Boys Colleage (Private boys school) are both quite close by bus (about 10-15 min I think). The Public schools.. well there are so many to choose from Holland Park High, Mac Gregor High (where I went), Sunnybank High, Mansfield High, and heaps of primary schools (most high schools have a preferred primary feeder school the kids just go from one to the other usually). education standards are quite high in queensland (I used to work for dept of ed there for many years) and a lot of time is spend integrating subjects..so they might built a space rocket and do science, math and english and art in the project.. they also do a lot of outdoor sports.. lots of t-ball, basket ball and swimming. and languages are really important too there.. esp asian languages.. everybody does a combination of german, japanise, french and a few others.. then they get to select on if they want to continue on.. a lot of kids to japanise (sorry can't spell it right at 7 am!)...

Hi.
We are from Wexford heading to Brisbane Sept/Oct time hopefully. Haven't decided on area yet either bayside or northern GC not too sure hearing a lot of good things about both places. I had Mt Gravatt on my list but my OH isn't comfortable that close to the city he is more a country man

Good to know there is plenty of Irish heading out!!

Lorraine.

Hi Lorraine
My sister-in-law is from Wexford and lives in Sydney. We were in Wexford for the wedding and stayed for a couple of weeks. Are you from Wexford town?

Sheena

Hi Sheena,

I'm from the country about 20mins away from town in a little village called Carrig-on-Bannow!
Are your in-laws from the town??

Yeah, it's my brother's wife. They've been home a few times and go between Wexford and Tyrone. Her family are from the town and I know a fella from Gorey. When we stayed down, Wexford were in the hurling final, so there was plenty of buzz!

HI again Lorraine
Actually I think I answered a question of yours on BiB, it was my SIL who found out about the schools in Manly as her friend has moved up there from Sydney and has primary school kids. If you want to know anything else, I can ask her for you.

Best wishes
Sheena

Thanks Sheena

I have plenty of schools to look into now to keep me going for awhile since I decided to check out north gold coast schools now too
It is so difficult to decide on anything to do with schools and suburbs until we get there and check them out in person. But thanks for all your info and I'll be back at you again if I need more advice!

Talk soon
Lorraine.
