A cane toad puts a poison out through its skin when touched,im not 100% what it is but is harmful to humans and animals,id say the few pet deaths you ever here of are due to snake or cane toads. They can sometimes be confused with brown tree frogs but the toads are lumpy and warty. They ask if you catch them to freeze them(not a chance, lol) as this is the most humane way to kill them, locals belt them with a golf club but thats frowned upon now.

Cane toads are poisonous and occasionally kill dogs and other creatures who mouth them. However, if you're in the suburbs and your dog is in your fenced back yard I don't think there's too much worry. I think they come out at night/evening so need to be careful then if you go for walkies.
Daily tablets for heartworm???? I thought there would be a vaccination. Are they expensive?

Lol...Cal you made me laugh saying that 'locals belt them with a golf club!' - but no whay would I put them in my freezer! I saw a programme actually re. cane toads in QLD (on Discovery channel) saying they had toxins on their skin.
Good to know it decreases the chances of them getting in your garden if it's fenced in....make note to self: '1st job...fence in back yard!' ha ha
Would a fenced back yard reduce your chances of snakes coming in too?

I'm pretty sure they still have cane toad bashing sessions on Fraser Island. Damn sure they won't be going in my freezer. Just imagine if you forgot it was there and tried to thaw it out for dinner.

You can buy snake proof fence which is like a tiny chain wire fence, does cost a fortune and unless i lived in the outback i dont think id bother.I am on acerage and have only ever seen one tiny green tree snake which was harmless and looked more like an overgrown worm!!lol
The toxin the toad gives off i believe gives a similar effect to LSD although im not recommending any of you go licking one to find out!!lmao!

Yeh...I heard it made you halucinate if you 'lick' a cane toad! Eeeewww.
Had a brainwave last night though...I think....if cane toads come out at night...what about if you have to let your dogs out...put a muzzle on them so they can't lick and LSD toads??!! Good or mad idea?
We are hoping to buy a house with acreage too, and don't want to be running around at night-time with my golf clubs and dressing gown on trying to bash cane toads!!!
We've been looking at Queenslander properties....the ones that are built up....do you know if they a tendency to have snakes go under them ...compared to brick built homes? It's just whenever I see them I could just imagine a snake coiled up under there in the shade...and 1 of my dogs sniffs it out and gets bit!!!! . . . . . . (see previous post about me having neurotic tendancies! lol)

Gone on Jenny ,,dare you lick one and let us know ,,no im only joking, knowing my luck youd die and then id feel guilty!!!
Propertys with dogs or horses are supposed to keep the risk of snakes to a minimum,so id really try not to worry.Honest we back onto bushland and everything and have had very little by means of scarey wildlife. You may find one under a queenslander i dont really know but being on stilts should prevent lots of other crawlie stuff!A good yearly pest spray works wonders, lol

I'm no cane toad licker Cal! lol. I'm more the 'basher' type! I'm sure if I come across one a 9-iron should sort it out! lol....only kidding...I'd kick it over next doors garden!
I'll get the pest control guy to give me a 'double-strength' spray...and I'll make him a cup of tea if he does a 'lap of honor' around my house/garden just to be on the safe side! lol.
If you back on to bushland and haven't seen anything, that's good enough for me!
