Hi

We live about 7km south of Toowoomba near a winery
Welcome to Preston Peak Wines

We've been here 2 years now and love it. Toowoomba is really a big country town, albeit with pretty much all the facilities you need. We like it because the people are really friendly - friendlier than you would normally find in the cities; the climate is less humid than most of Queensland - as we are high up it tends to be a few degrees cooler in both summer and winter - we do even get frosts (very occasionally) - this also means that you get trees changing with the seasons as we don't have a tropical climate; property is a lot cheaper than in Brissie - I think the average house price is $250k; there is very little traffic - we are always horrified at how busy the roads are the nearer you travel towards Brissie!; the schools here are very good with a huge variety of both public and private - there are no catchment areas as such so you can send your kids wherever you like;the scenery is beautiful - Towoomba is called the "Garden City" - there are lots of parks which are immaculate.

We've had very little difficulties finding jobs but that does depend on what you do.

Here are a couple of websites
ToowoombaNow - Home
Toowoomba City Council Home - Home

I think that the main complaint people have about Toowoomba is that it is a bit too quiet - that suits us at our age (in our 40s) but for a younger couple in their 20s I think it would be worth coming to visit first to see what you think.

Toowoomba does have issues with its water supply although we will be connected to Wivenhoe dam early next year allegedly. We have installed 3 water tanks and have not had to use town water at all since we have been here. We have the added bonus that we don't pay water rates either

Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

hiya Squidget sorry to butt in
I am coming over to Toowoomba to live in a couple of weeks on my own, trying to secure rental property, a little concerned over the mention of water probs do I need to be concerned and bear that in mind when I do find somewhere. As for work I am fortunate enought to have secured a job. It sounds like Toowoomba will be lovely to settle in. Abeit lonely initially, here's hoping

Hi Ginette,

The main thing you will find impacts on you is there is no outside use of water allowed at all i.e. you won't be able to wash your car (although there are still commercial car washes open) or water any lawns or plants (unless you use grey water which is water recycled from your washing machine etc) Ishouldn't think that many landlords would have water tanks installed unfortunately.

Have you managed to find a rental yet? I'm not sure what the rental market is like as we went straight from a serviced apartment to buying our own place

If you are looking to buy somewhere and want the name of a good real estate agent, I can highly recommend the guy we used. He acted more like an agent for us and drove us all round the various areas of Toowoomba, taking us on a guided tour effectively until we found the area we liked Not sure if he deals in rentals though....

I'm sure you'll love it here - if you need a friendly face when you first get here, then do give us a shout and I'll show you the sights!!

Unfortunately most areas of Queensland are suffering the same water restrictions so dont let that put you off Toowoomba. The situation is getting better but a bit more rain wouldnt go amiss. When you do buy a house make rain tanks one of your priorities ,we have 3 water tanks and trickle feed town water,i havnt used town water since before xmas so it is possible to survive on just rain water you just cant induldge in bug bubble baths and sparkly clean cars, lol. You would have to source water from outside of a restricted area if you had a pool built though as its currently illegal to fill a new pool on level 6 restrictions, hope this helps a bit

cheers thanks, I have to say the reality of coming over on my own is starting to hit hard, but I am so grateful to this forumn where people are genuinely offering support. I have finally managed to get some agents to respond to my emails for requests for assistance in finding rental property. You would think they would bite my hand off, alas no lol.
I am sure it will all work out it is just part of the path I need to travel, again thank you
ginny

hi cheers thank you, I had initially considered buying but thought it best to hold of for a year minimally just to make sure I am happy before I commit to anything I cant pull out of. I am fortunate to have sold my property here just before the market dives, (lucky me). If my daughter had agreed to follow me I would be buying alas the cupid struck and good luck to her. This way I dont have to be a granny and look after any little ones result! lol. I may take you up on the offer of the sights I certainly will be looking for freindly faces thanks ginny
