Townsville - The up side?

Hi all,

First, as this is my first post, some background. I am british, my wife is french. We migrated to Christchurch New Zealand at the end of 2005. We are now considering moving somewhere hotter and aussie it hot!!!

We have picked townsville as a possible, looking at the town website, they a bigging it up, loads of growth yaddy yah etc. It does look nice on the video's etc.

Browsing these forums, not too many posts about the good things, mostly problems. When we moved to NZ, we were on another forum site, mostly the same, ie only the people who were waiting to go, or the people who were having problems were still active.

So, is there any good sides to Townsville, i'm sure everything said on these forums is true, but surely there is a flip-side to balance it all out?

Here's hoping,

thanks for listening,

Tim

HI tim

I am moving to townsville around june/ july time hopefully. I am going there to be with family. Bad things abour townsville : weather..yes its lush around march - november time and its lovely but hideous in summer.the wet season can be really depressing, nothing gets dry. humidity is foul..humidity equals frizzy hair (your wife will appreciate this)..jelly fish in the se from nov to march (however beaches have nets), not the most amazing array of restaurants or pubs...

but............on the flip side....weather IS LUSH over the winter period...seriously lush..like spain or greece... loads of prosperity, its meant to be the fastest growing city in oz, v v v friendly people..so laid back they are almost horizontal.....also yes there may not be that many restaurants or pubs but they are all lovely and you will get to know the staff etc etc....

honestly i think that townsville gets a little bit of a bad rep when really it has changed so much in the last 10 years, i was there in 1998 and it was a sleepy little town almost, went in sept 07 and its a totally different place.

give it a go !!

Helen

yeah tim ignore the anti townsville posts - alot of people from brisbane cant possibly comprehend why not everyone wants to go to brisbane

my aunty moved there from liverpool 2 years ago and although she moans about the humidity over the summer months just when she has had enough, march comes and the weather is terrific. No drought like brisbane either - in september people in brisbane werent supposed to flush wees just number 2s but in townsville they can flush as much as they like !!! alot of people who moan about townsville went there years and years ago..it really is a different place. The clothes shopping may not be oxford street or rodeo drive but you wont meet friendlier people.

thats my opinion anyway. I could be tearing my soon to be frizzy hair out when i get there !!

Hi Tim
I have been to Townsville but was a long time ago. I did like it a lot when I was there but it is probably much more built up now. All the towns up that east side are really nice, it's just picking one that suits you, employment, housing, etc.
Airlie Beach is nice too.

Lesley

Hiya,
First went to Townsville for a holiday eighteen years ago and absolutely loved it.Since then have visited five times over the years and watched it change dramatically.
Yes the summertimes are real humid stinkers but I suppose you will get used to them. The winters in Townsville are gorgeous, lots and lots of sunshine with a lovely temperature of 25 degrees.
We are hoping to move there as soon as we have sold the house over here in drizzly Lancashire, (we are looking at the Bushland beach area)
Everybody has there own opinion about the place,I have had some real negative replies from previous questions I have asked, but it still has not put me off giving it a go.I hope that I will love it as much living there as I did holidaying there.
Good luck and best wishes
Jackie.

Hi Tim

I visited Townsville many years ago when I was on a working holiday in Australia. I really liked the place + it is near to the barrier reef islands and Airlie Beach which is another great town. Best thing to do is have a holiday there and check it out for yourself. Videos always look good but you need to experience it for "real" to make your mind up.

Best of luck !

Les

Hi Tim,
as I've mentioned elsewhere, I will hopefully be landing in Townsville on April 9th... going via Dubai and hearing horror stories about customs there... lol
I know a lot of bad things have been said about the place on here, but you can say bad things about anywhere.
speaking to people who already live there on a couple of yahoo groups and they love the place, wouldn't live anywhere else, my girlfriend lives there, she loves it.

I will post my opinons on here for you when i've got over the jet lag/culture shock and camping trip to Lake Tinaroo... :-)
