Happy to be of any help

I can tell you all about the weather up here (Cairns way)
Wet season... Nov to about May... hot and humid, its been between about 26 and 39 since we've been here. 39 is exceptional though and it only lasted a couple of days. Mostly around 32. I find it fine, some struggle with it. Everywhere has aircon, although we honestly don't put it on in the house much, just fans mostly. The rain isn't a problem, heavy downpours. But we've not realy had a cyclone come through yet. They tell me it can rain for 3 weeks. If a big cyclone comes close I'm out of here.
Dry season... Only been here on holiday in the dry as we arrived in September last year, gorgeous weather, 26-28 I think. They tell me I will have to get my duvet out too. We don't even have a sheet on the bed at the moment.
Problem in the wet season with marine stingers, so you realy can't swim in the sea for half the year. There are stinger nets on many beaches although they are not 100% effective, the small and deadly Irukandje (?spelling) jellyfish can still get through the mesh. But people do still swim, even outside the nets. People wear stinger suits out on the reef. I would swim in the net, but I'm not risking it with the kids. There are plenty of gorgeous water holes to swim in instead (crocodile free)
Schools seem good. LOADS of building work going on. Where we live you are looking at half a million dollars for a 4 bed 2 bath with swimming pool., cheapest was $470000 when we were looking. It's a buyers market though in the wet. Loads of people from down south are coming up here to escape the drought so prices expected to rise.
Cairns itself is cheaper
Check out realestate.com.au
Obviously some areas of Cairns are cheaper, some pricey.
Have a look on British Expats for a good run down on Cairns districts, but watch out, they're not very nice on there. Guy called Bix lives in Cairns and there is heaps of information
Have fun
Ax

lots of building work going on in Townsville, read somewhere they expect it to double in size in ten years or so, should be enough houses for you? lol house prices aren't to bad by English standards, rising though, the weather is.. well Mackay just down the coast had 620mm of rain in 12 hours and Townsville had about 240mm the other day, Mackay was declared a flood disaster area... the gf has had a flooded yard for about 4 weeks now, but it has been a very bad wet season this year,
Australia & World Weather Forecast, BoM Radar, Rainfall Map & Report is a good site for current weather, Townsville comes under Lower Burdekin area in warnings,
will let you know when i get there, :)
