Buying and owning cars in Queensland

Could someone fill me in on the details of buying and owning a car in Queensland, e.g....

How long does a road worthy ticket last, is it transferable from the old owner to me when i buy the car?
      As above with rego?
How often do i need to get the car road worth tested?
      How do you renew rego?
      How much is rego?
How much is a road worthy ticket?

      Thanks for anyones help

(Would make a good sticky with all the answers)

Hiya when you buy a car you pay 2% of the value as a one off tax payment. All vehicles have to have a road worthy certificate in order to be sold, most tickets(as far as i know) last 3 months ,you only have to do one if your selling the vehicle.
The rego is like uk car tax but also includes a compulsery third party ins ,(CTP) fees are approx $500 per year ,renewable 6 or 12 mthly. If you choose to have fully comp ins as well its about $500 per year on top of the rego.its worth shopping around for fully comp but CTP prices are fixed and dont vary that much company to company.hope this helps a bit

You have a road worthy test done when the car is purchased / sold. And yes you do get your car serviced though it is not a legal requirement unless it is blowing smoke and thats against the law!! However, if the car is a heap of crap the police can pull the car over, and give the owner a defect notice which can deem the car unroad worthy. I think you will then need to get a road worthy cert once the defects have been fixed.:)
