Smile Potential Scientist in QLD

Hey everyone. I'm a 15 year old Nature Obsessed boy who wants nothing more than to be either a Botanist or some form of Zoologist, hopefully in Queensland. Can anybody reccomend any good Universities? I would LOVE to get a Degree and then a Masters Degree in one, or both, of these subjects. :)

Will anybody fund research into Botany/Zoology in Queensland? I'm really worried that nobody will fund any research into these subjects...

I'm also looking to become a Conservationist on the side, protecting the native Australian plant and animal life. Steve Irwin () has brought me into these subjects along with my plant collection at home. Any advice will be brilliant thanks =D

Thanks, Andy Tucker

There are several Uni's in qld which are in the worlds top 200. Not sure about those which do your area of interest though.
A lot of that kind of research is done by the CSIRO which is a partly gov funded institution. Check out the CSIRO, Uni of Queensland and there are many others so check out the "top universitys" list on the web. :)

I can tell you that James Cook University in Cairns doesn't do much in that line but Townsville does. Only because I've been looking for myself, I have a zoology degree and am thinking of doing some further study. You've probably found all you need to know on Fatpom's site, I might go have a look at that.
Good luck with it! Australia has to be a better place to find a zoology related job, I couldn't find one in the UK, ended up in medical science instead.

Hi Andy, My son who is currently 16 was looking at being a Vet but more more now he is swaying to be a Herpetologist.

We are moving Brisbane way and not sure what the scope for that type of career might be, anyone got any ideas?

The other one wants to be a computer programmer, much more of a straight forward option lol

Regards

Hey cool. Thanks Asylon! Do you have any idea for the Brisbane area? I'm moving there with my parents and brother quite soon... Do any of you know about collages? I heard/read that we don't leave school til we're 18 and you do your A levels or something of that sort while we are still at school. Is this true?

Yes and Yes. Years 11 and 12 are the Aussie versions of our A levels and your performance over those 2 years gives you a mark or grade, this grade governs what Uni you can get into and what you can study.
I know nothing about Brisbane sorry, we live in the far north. But hope it all goes well for you. I studied zoology and comparative physiology, which was good, I went on to run a Histology laboratory in the UK. Now I fancy doing some more marine based stuff so I can get involved with the reef up here.

Thanks! =]
Good luck with your Marine Biology up there. I hope you do well! I can't wait to start my studies, although they are quite a few years off yet. How long does it take to get a Masters Degree and a PHD?

Andy

In the Uk a masters is 1 year and a phd is 3 years full time study. I did a 3 year masters as I was working full time and did it on block release, my employer paid half (Cellular Pathology). My husband is convinced you have to do a masters before you start your phd here ,as his brother did it that way. You don't in the UK, you can go straight from your Bsc to phd. I havn't got a clue which is right, sorry. They do a funny thing with your Bsc in Oz, in the UK everyone does an honours degree and the grade you get at the end determines whether or not you can put that Hons after your name. From what I can gather, to do honours here you are selected to do some sort of aditional study based on your performance. (so my aussie neighbour told me, she was very chuffed with herself dfor getting Hons), this makes me think that overall their Bsc may be of a lower standard. Whatever, you need to find out for yourself, like I said, not got a clue realy.
Wish you luck though.
Ax
