Internet TV

Hi

Question for anyone downunder already

On your internet service can you still access the bbc i-player, itv and channel 4 to watch programs?

For example you can watch Eastenders from last 7 days if you miss it. Does the i player work in Australia.
Also can you watch all the highlights from football matches on Broadband, digital TV, mobile & phone - sport, news & entertainment - Virgin Media

No you can't. Its all down to the respective tv companies not having the worldwide rights to the programmes shown. The BBC state on their website that they are looking into being able to open their iplayer worldwide but at the mo only UK ip addresses can recieve the programmes.

you would be able to if you had a UK based proxy service to route your internet through.

There are also companies that would setup a slingbox in the UK for you for around 50 pounds a month. However with the cost of internet access in OZ, which mostly seems to be bandwidth limited, it might not be much of an option.

UKnova is pretty good yes... it might take you a few times to get a login, I think I tried off and on for a week, but its worth it... Sling is good for an instant fix though.

Sling Media - Home of the Slingbox

You plug connect the box up in the UK to a TV aerial and an internet connection (parents back in the UK, friends relatives etc). You then run Slingplayer on your PC in Oz and it streams UK TV live over the internet to your PC in Oz.

Using it on home internet conenctions is OK, though is depends on the speed. Most ISPs in the UK have a slow uplink however Sky have 768Kbits and I know of some ISPs with 1.5mbit+ uploads so there are options.

You can also pay a 3rd party company to do this for you, for instance:

http://www.thetelly.net/

You get much better quality picture as they give you much higher bandwidth. Given the time delay you probably would need the PVR version.

I currently use a slingbox from the USA and one in the UK, but as has already been said you can get better quality and through torrent sites like UKnova.

The problem with all of the above is the cost of internet in Oz, where in the UK you could get 16mbit unlimited connection from Sky for 10 pounds a month there is nothing like that in Oz.

Thankyou!
Don't think that's going to work for us, don't know anyone in the UK with broadband.
I seem to have downloaded an episode of Torchwood from THebox, now I've just got to work out how to play it.
