[quote=fatpom;168927]Domestic pets are perfectly capable of living outside in this climate...
..

I did think this but then thought perhaps it could be too hot outside and they may quite like a bit of air con

.........
The problem in aus is with people who allow thier pets to roam at night particularly cats which decimate the unique wildlife.
.......
We've had this convo I believe before on this but my cats stay in most times and always come in of a night, I am sure that wildlife like here in the UK are subject to traffic accidents and endangered by the ever demanding new builds, possibly even more so than being hunted by a cat!

Most people who have been here a long time will say never criticise the australian way of doing things. I would modify that a little by saying provided you make non-judgemental comparisons between the two cultures you may in the right circumstances get away with it... but you won't change anything... and you've no particular right to do so.

You appear to be doing quite well in quickly appreciating that it is a different world view here.

I dont think it's about critisim and as you say as long as it is said in a non-judgemental way then where is the harm!
And I do believe the pen is a bad idea if people can put any type of animal into it, and that AllieKate would have every right to say so!

I know we are Poms in Oz but surely we cant be scared to express our opinion without offending and I am sure the Ozzies would see us as quite pathetic if we were to scared to say what we thought was right!!!! In the nicest possible way of course

You've got a bloody good point there we're getting to the stage where a good night sleep is almost impossible.

Yep we have! :) The cat issue is a real problem far far bigger than road kill. Its a national problem not directed at anyone or anyone group in particular. The cat is literally out of the bag. We may now just have to accept the extinctions rates predicted and hope they're exaggerated time wise?
The cat lover brigade tend to get cranky with the conservationists and vice versa. Perhaps the only cheerful aspect to this saga

Sorry but all I care about is the animal welfare side of things. I do understand that it is the way Australians do things, and i do feel i have no right to criticise. I know that most dogs live outside here without problems, that they are transported tied on the backs of boiling hot utes, many are treated roughly, etc, etc. That is how these animals were born into the world and they know no different.

But I DO have a right to do what I can for these poor animals when I have seen what I have seen, heard what I have heard. And I believe that there are a large number of migrants coming here who would find the situation as unpleasant as I do - it is simply never talked about is it ? So I am not trying to change Ozzie culture (perish the thought!!!) , I am just expressing my deep anguish over something that is very important to me.

I would be really interested to know the animal welfare situation in other parts of the country, and if anyone else feels the same ?

I agree Kim!

I think it just depends on the way you say it. For example, if you criticise the act without attaching blame to the culture, then who could take offence?

Of course the countries are different, but both are made up of individuals, and I'm sure many Aussies disagree with the treatment of animals here. And that's how change will take place, just as it did in the UK.

When we first came over, we were appalled to see dogs sold in pet shops, but whilst I still don't like it, have got used to it. That would be pretty dangerous if we weren't prepared to do something about it,but there are animal rights campaigners here just as in the UK. So stand up and be counted!

And just as there are animal rights campaigners here, there are people who care. Like Alliekate, the RSPCA members, like breeders who can see defects becoming more common as 'popular' dogs are being over-bred, the campaigners....we're just a bit behind you - although please remember that animal cruelty is happening in the UK too; I don't believe that we are any worse here. Just different to what you are used to!

OMG! I never thought it would happen...I think I've disagreed a bit with Fatpom!

I'd like to be able to agree with you on this but the facts on the ground are different. I certainly had to learn the hard way. :)

Look at it from another perpective. Someone arrives in the UK from another culture. Lets say a Yank (we won't pick on the arabs for a change :)). This Yank starts telling you... "We do it this way in texas... works much better. That way is wrong" and so on and so forth. No matter how nice its put you'd probably tell the yank where to put his or her opinions eventually. It wouldn't matter if the yank was right or wrong. There is not a right or wrong culture and there isn't a one world concensus... well not yet anyway but I'm working on it.
