Guest
All are great suburbs. I live near Ascot and Hamilton so will speak for them... The train line isn't great as it runs infrequently, you can get the City Cat ferries but it takes a while but a nice way of getting around. Probably ticks all your other boxes however. If you look at a map of Brisbane all trains run great northwards up to Eagle Junction station, which makes Clayfield area a great option but it's not on river but has a great primary school (Eagle Junction) and A good high School Kedron State (added abit more info here as I live in nearbouring suburb Wooloowin) I would say New Farm should be added to your list as it ticks all boxes probably best in Brisbane. fish.01
Primary and state preferably J Most of the schools in the inner west are good schools and worth considering. Saying that, there are many good schools across Brisbane. fish.01
I noticed in your other post you wanted near to cafes, parks etc. Milton State School is next to: Rosalie Village (cinema, restaurants, cafes, deli etc) and Gregory Park: and Frew Park Source: http://www.landezine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Landezine_Arena-Play-Structure_Guymer-Bailey_000.jpg Is one stop on the citycat ferry to town, Source: http://www.nedmartin.org/v3/_img/20150216/20150222-2872.jpg one stop on the train Source: http://www.themilton.com.au/assets/images/rail-render.jpg and a few stops on the bus. You can also ride your bicycle along the bicentennial bikeway to the city. juliab1099
Wow fish 01, thank you so much for taking the time to do that epic post ! Paddington/Rosalie def my favs ATM. Lastonealive, thank you for the train and citycat insight and will def give new farm a look. Any more opinions greatly received. How would you describe these areas in terms of busyness ? Are they uber busy or family busy iykwim ?! Julia ☺
srg73
Paddington very hilly but an old borough with plenty of expensive queenslanders etc. Paddington does not seem too busy compared to some neighbouring boroughs. Hamilton and Ascot (where we are) is a funny place. Ascot is great, the most expensive borough in Brisbane with many huge houses etc. Hamilton is being built up very quickly and continues to expand, a boom area although developers are selling them for a high price. Ferry from Brett's Wharf is about 50 mins which is quite tedious but it's there if needed. I drive into CBD (job needs a car), takes 20 mins max although Kingsford Smith Drive can be a pain and is only going to get worse! Rent initially, get to know Brisbane however both good areas S
juliab1099
If it was just me I would not hesitate to go for short term rentals and look around a bit. It would nt be fair on my daughter though so feeling under pressure to get it right first time! Srg73 what if 'funny'about ascot and Hamilton?! I'm after a relaxed feel to the area I live in too. All opinions greatly appreciated. J :-)

Are they uber busy or family busy iykwim ?! Julia ☺ The true uber busy spine of Brisbane runs from West End to Teneriffe/Bowen Hills. The rest less so. The main barrier to these suburbs is cost. If you have the budget you could find some lovely spots. If not, we could look at some quieter places further out. Less us know whether you just want to concentrate on the inner city places like Paddington.
juliab1099
Hello, I am not dead against the idea of being a bit further out, one thing that certainly pulls me in that direction is that I like a village feel rather than urban sprawl. My partner is an engineer so likely to be CBD based, I am a health care manager/policy maker so likely to be working in a hospital. Budget is around $800-1000 per week and would love a pool and garden! Thanks for all this input, it really is so helpful and appreciated. juliab1099
Sorry no, other way around. So, I don't want to feel like I'm living in an extension to the CBD, although having said that where I live now (6miles out from leeds centre) really is a very big busy city, and when I visited Brissie in 2007 it felt. Much smaller scale. J

Much smaller scale. J The areas I mentioned before, the spine running from West End through to Teneriffe/Bowen Hills feel more like an extension to the city. The other areas you mentioned, Paddington, Clayfield etc aren't like that. I am 4.5km away in the inner west near Paddington and it is peaceful and family based. In Brisbane you are more likely to end up in a too quiet place rather than the other way around. The things I like about living closer in are: - character homes...love the tin and timber queenslander homes. People who like modern brick and tile often go further out to get them. - old trees, beautiful old residential gardens and parks in the inner city. - windy, hilly, characterful streets. - often a lot more walkable than further out. Further out often more car based lifestyle. - lot more cafes, quirky shops, high streets...further out is more of a drive to large shopping mall experience. - can ride my bicycle to work - very good public schools - history in the built environment...old churches, old schools, old shops, old monuments, local stories/dramas etc - close to the best markets - close to the best city facilities, museums etc - easy to get to city events - close to universities. - more people on the street at night - better public transport - far less traffic stress in your life than living further out (if CBD worker) If you can expand on what lifestyle you are after I could maybe narrow it down more for you. Just note Brisbane is not a beach city, it is a river city, so that is off the list, specially inner city. Guest
I would look at Bulimba and Hawthorne too on the southside, nice family areas though slightly more awkward to commute to CBD from. I like my area Wooloowin/Clayfield as you never have to wait longer than 5 mins for a train so can be in the city hassle free in no time but also plenty of cafe and restaurants around also a massive park (Kalinga park) which is always full of families. Grange and Windsor are nice areas close to the city but not the river and very close to RBWH, Brisbane's biggest hospital, very good bus and train access from there too. Wilston has a great village feel to it too in that area. Seriously you could just draw a circle around the city 5k's or so and they are pretty much all fantastic. I'm biased to northern suburbs having lived in Wooloowin and Teneriffe so know the areas around there best. fish.01
I would look at Bulimba and Hawthorne too Yes, walkable to Oxford St and walk to the citycat would be great. Love it. A couple of downsides to consider are bus trip/drive not great (if can't get city cat) and future aircraft noise from parallel runway. juliab1099
Fisho1, I want what you described! I would be delighted to not need a car at all! And happy to drive to beach at weekends, I do love the beach but in reality won't have time to be there every day. Love the river too. Paddington/rosalie really sound like the right place for us. Can you tell me more about that area in housing terms.? Do you think my budget of 800-1000 pw gets us a queenslander with a view?! Thank you J
