Hi peeps!

My husband, child (2years old) and I are wanting to move to Oz. My husband is a GP so I'm pretty sure there aren't many jobs in City centres for UK qualified GPs. Now the problem we have is that I' 'reasonably young' (28) and he's 33. He's quite happy doing whatever and doesn't mind a quiet life. While I no longer want to be clubbing until 4am, I still enjoy lively pubs/ bars, restaunts when can get childcare, socialising/ meeting new people, shopping and general stuff that I have easy access to where I live (near Cardiff City Centre). I have recently started in a local netball league (which I am awful at but enjoy to game and socialising with them). I'm definately not a massive City girl as not fussed on London, but also definately not ready for 'the good life'. I've been to Brisbane and loved it. I have been to other parts of Australia too but that was my fave. Thinking Perth a bit far from anything and friends less likely to visit in they happen to be in Oz, as most go o East Coast.

Obviously schools will be important as well as childcare before LO starts school. I like the beach so easy'ish access would be great and am moving for some sunshine (don't fancy the places with cold seasons).

I am open to considering other places too.

HELPPPPP!!!!

You don't have to be living "the good life"to not be living in or near a city.I used to live 45 mins drive from a city in Oz,but you'd think you were in the middle of nowhere!lol what I'm trying to say is,don't dismiss area's that you might think are too way out, because where I lived (Small country town, pop 1,500)we enjoyed a great lifestyle, but were close enough (we actually disliked going to the big smoke)to drive down into the burbs and city if we needed it.We were also not that far from beaches either. We had two doctors in town, both who we knew by first names (they insisted everyone call them by their first names)and they loved living in that town! Our town had a good sports scene, the town hall was the cinema as well as an indoor market, two pubs which were great, and so on.We very rarely felt the need to visit the city or burbs.

Rents/houses are also cheaper which is a bonus.Better community feel, your kids (as you do)know everyone,I could go on hon but please also consider country area's,that are say an hours drive from Brisbane.I can't recommend any because I came from SA.

Normally incoming GP's are only allowed to work in areas where there are shortages - usually rural and regional areas - and the GP won't be granted a number for Medicare billing unless working in one of these areas.

I think you have to be in Oz for about 10 years working under these restrictions before being able to move anywhere.

However, some of these are on the outer fringes of large cities so you definitely don't have to be living in an isolated area.

These are current GP vacancies in the Brisbane area which would qualify for the special area restrictions for GPs:

Lots of UK qualified Dr's near me,a new Bulk Billing surgery up on our Estate and most of their Dr's were UK taught. Personally i would job hunt first ,then find an area based on that. I think would be quite surprised how big and the amount of amenities available in some of the outer Brisbane suburbs, property and rent is cheaper than the CBD or surrounding suburbs too.

Hi i see from your posts that you are from Cardiff. Myself(33) and my partner(30) emigrated to Brisbane 6 months ago from Merthyr, we have and 8 year old and 2 year old. We were undecided on locations but we have settled in Brisbane Southside for the time being. Long term we will move, i wish it was to the Sunshine Coast but most of the work is appears to be near the Brisbane CBD so we won't move too far away at the moment. So much to do here also the Gold Coast and Sunshine aren't too far away, it really is like living the dream each week and brilliant to see our children experiencing so much to date the weather really does make a difference. If theres any help we can give you when you arrive please get in touch, it would be great to meet with you also.

Best wishes

Very easy pub crawl in Mandalay. the only one is The Jubilee Tavern in Jubilee Pocket, which is essentially Mandalayand, Jubilee Pocket, and being in a hollow, gets very muggy at times...

Have a squiz at Dingo Beach, just up the road from Cannonvale. Better beach, better sea breezes, better pub overlooking the sea.

Hi Nish

I have written a few books about where to live in Queensland and I migrated to the Gold Coast about 15 years back.

We have a big shortage of doctors in Australia and yes, if they can convince yo to, they would prefer you worked in a rural or regional centre first. This isn't a bad thing though as there are some incredible places across Queensland. Try to stay along the coast though as it gets very, very hot and dusty inland (the Outback).

First step is to check out the job availability on seek.com.au Then, I would suggest you speak with Queensland Health. There are heaps of international doctors hired by the hospitals. The fact that you already speak English is a boon!

I have two kids and there are almost always good schools in medium to large towns/ cities. In the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast, there's an abundance. Mackay also has some excellent schools and is an awesome place to live as the Great Barrier Reef is right on your doorstep!

If you need any more help or local connections (such as the number of a doctor you can speak with or a mid wife who works for the hospital and migrated from the UK), just email me and I will hook you up!

Best of luck!

Chantal
