We have recently arrived in townsville, we used this site a lot during the immigration process but didn't post much. Now that we are here we thought that we would say hello and offer any help to others looking to move here and surrounding areas.
We would also be glad to hear from others who may be in the twin cities area.
Hope you're settling in well, I'm interested to know about Townsville as my brother was considering moving there from Brissy last year (but his wife was having twins and they put it off), and may still go

Hi guys,
Congratulations and how are you finding Townsville?
It's one of the places we are considering, we spent 4 weeks camping on Magnetic Island what seems a lifetime ago (pre kids) and loved it to bits but didn't see much of Townsville itself. If U could tell me a bit about living there it would be great. Any major downsides ? Much to do especially for small children ? Houses cheap as chips?
And whats the twin cities area ? (excuse my ignorance)
If not Townsville then we will go even further north.
Hope you are having a great time !
Thanks
Another Alyson
Townsville has a population of around 170,000 and is the largest town in Queensland after Brisbane (so I'm told)
The population is expected to double within the next 10-15 years. That means lots of new suburbs and lots of money being spent on the infastructure.
When you first arrive it looks a bit weird, there was a heavy american influence here in WW2 and there is still evidence of that. So road systems with main roads and perpendicular streets bisecting them. Great coz if you keep turning left you will eventually end up where you started. lol. The weird bit is that building must have been pretty unregulated at the time and gives the impression of higgledy piggledy. Lots of times you will drive thru what looks like commercial areas turn a corner and see spectacular views of the mountain ranges or the sea.
Loads of sports facilities and home to the Cowboys (rugby league, huge here and very well supported also basketball is popular.) At the moment a new stadium is being built for AFL (Australian Football League and for international cricket. This is actually in Thuringowa thats where the twin cities come in - Townsville and Thurngowa
Houses are not cheap as chips sorry - they have doubled in price in the last 4 years, for a 4 bed house on a decent plot size you won't get much change out of AU$ 350,000 - 400,000
However because it is a transient town, also affluent due to the fact that most major corporations have their head offices here, the huge university, brand new hospital and two large forces bases property is still likely to rise so not a bad investment.
Also because of the above lots of people with young children and also lots to do which is free.
This post is getting a bit long now so i will leave it there, anything else PM me.
Oh forgot some downsides
Can't swim in sea because of the deadly jellyfish between November and May (plenty of other places to swim though, and water parks etc and free!!)
It can get really hot in summer and humid, but winters are supposed to be fantastic
You have to drive hundreds of miles to get to any other places (But isn't that why they invented aeroplanes lol)
Got the usual array of creepy crawlies as other places in Oz

Hi Cloughie:
Many thanks for your post; I REALLY like to hear what Poms in OZ are really up to! I think it'd be too hot for us, although sounds really good for lots of folk looking for different lifestyle from UK.
Anyone in Tassie or Southern SA or Southern Victoria like to post on their respective sites so we can see how you're all getting along, too?!
Many thanks Alison, Enjoy, take care & we love reading your posts!
