I am hoping to move to Queensland with my husband , 3 children, my sister and her family and my mum.
I DREAM of living by the beach and searching on-line Caloundra is looking like a good place to settle and raise a family.
The only thing that concerns me is the work situation there. Does anyone know how big it is in terms of businesses and industry and is there much work there? My husband is a project manager for an IT company and my sister's husband a project manager for the electricity board.
Is is feasible to commute to Brisbane from Caloundra?
Or can anyone recommend an area nearer to Brisbane that is on the coast but a nice place to raise children??
Hi ...caloundra is very nice and has one of my favourite beaches..Kings Beach with play grounds ,water features and a free saltwater pool all next to the beach. Some lovely restaurants looking on to the water....and at christmas when I was VERY homesick I was in a cafe and a Barbershop Quartet started singing Christmas songs...it really cheered me up and is my favourite memory to date.
Anyway way off on a tangent....we live 20 mins from brisbane city and it takes us about an hour to get to caloundra..thats with good traffic....on a bad day with heavy traffic I think you would be about 1 1/2 hrs to maybe 2 travelling time.
I know some people who live in the sunshine coast and the general view is that it is VERY hard to secure work in the area...one lady I know had 230 rejections...that must be hard to take! I am sure it will all depend on which type of work but I would do lots of research if you need to secure a job quickly.
It is a lovely dream so hope you achieve your goal.
Me again...have you thought of Redcliffe...we stayed there when we first arrived and we loved it...beaches not as nice but still very pretty...loads of family activities ,near the water ,reasonable house prices and predicted to rise rapidly in the next few years. And the very famous Morgans fish and Chip shop close by.YUM
Caloundra is such a pretty place but i couldnt live there, just didnt do it for me, although it is where we saw a dolphin swim past :)....Redcliffe is a little like Eastbourne with a lot of older people retiring there...
Take a look at Mooloolaba, or Bribie Island too, they are real nice places...Bribie Island is quieter than Mooloolaba, but still lovely..
Mooloolaba is my fav place, lots to do, the beach is gorgeous, Maroochydore is along the coast a little and still lovely
Hi Thanks for your reply.
Can I ask what you didnt like about Caloundra? I havent been there so would be interested to know?
Do you know what the work situation is like in Maroochydore or Mooloolaba?
Hi there, we live in Caloundra and have to say its beautiful. My husband works in Brisbane and it takes him about an hour travelling time. On weekends the roads are very busy with visitors coming into Caloundra, we don't have to drive anywhere as it's all on our door step. Have a look at this link it's very informative.

We are looking at Caloundra when we come out in Sept. so any top tips of area would be great we did look at Caboolture but have been warned against and are also looking at little mountain, Pelican Waters......we have 3 small children and am trying to get a good feel for things with different opinions before we arrive so any details would be great......The beaches look great in Caloundra do you get alot of sand flies etc if you live close to the beach........
We live in Caloundra and it really is fabulous. Redcliffe is not very nice, Caboolture.... well just dont even think about it.
A Brisbane commute can be a bit of a pain, but living in paradise more than makes up for it. Life outside of work is most important, and there are so many options here on the doorstep. Mooloolaba is very nice, but an extra 20 minutes drive north, whichh pushes a journey to Brisbane just that bit too far.
Hi, I'm awaiting news re a job in Queensland but my prospectivce employers are simply checking my references so I'm fairly sure I'll be moving out there. I'm 29 and will be moving out to Oz alone. I have to decide whereabouts in Queensland to live and I've basically narrowed it down to Sunshine Coast or the Gold Coast. Can you offer me any advice as to which would be best for me. I want to be somewhere where there is plenty going on and it'll be easy to meet other folk?
Thanks for the honest opinion! Maybe Caloundra will be a place we visit often rather than live - sigh!!
Hadnt thought of Redcliffe thanks for the tip, will do some more interent searching on the place.

Hi there, I'm moving to Redcliffe in 7 weeks time, my hub is already there and loves it, plenty for kids to do, only a half hour to the city and half hour the other way to the great beaches. I'll be sure to post all I know when I get there. There's a free lagoon for the kids right by the beach so its a safe environment for the little kids to play in. Plus Redcliffe High School has a very good reputation as far as State Schools go.
