Hi,

Well if there are I have never seen any, I work in Brisbane CBD and live on the Sunshine Coast and my wife hates spiders and she is fine. You see the odd small thing but nothing big and scary, a few flying beatles and lots of lizards....

havent seen many snakes either

hope that carms your nerves

Hi Bethand Neil

We asked the same question when we arrived here in Brisbane and we had the same responce. All I can say is i have never seen a funnel web ,neither has my neighbour and she has lived here for over 30 years. My wife is petrified of spiders and she loves it here, but all you have to do is change your life style patterns.Australia is full of wildlife non poisonous and poisonous but most wildlife would rather keep away from man,so just remember don't put your fingers in holes or hands inareas where you can't see, wear long trousers and boots in long grass especially in the bush...........etc etc.

There are no funnel webs in queensland except maybe the zoo. You will find them in NSW. Sydney has its own named variety.

Ok, I am now going to shoot the person that told me no funnel web's in QLD. But maybe they meant far North Queensland where we are. Here's hoping. We do get red backs tho.

Quick note to Mrs Imp'

if you read this thread sweetie, it is all lies, there are no spiders or sharks or snakes anywhere near Australia, they are just trying to scare everyone away because it is so nice.

Please say we can still go!

The deadliest spider in the world has now been found in North Queensland. An adult has about 20 minutes....Say ya preys I guess. The deadliest was thought to be the Sydney Funnel Web, followed by the Red Back (relation to Black Widow), but the NQ Funnel Web makes both look like Tonka Toys. The Bug Man

However, they don't bite Locals of course.....just the tourists.
(kidding- I am outta here)

Morning all

My wife is also terrified of spiders so i did a bit of research for her.

Apparently the last recorded spider related death was in the 1970's. I guess this is because they have antidotes for all spider bites now and they are never that far away (unless you are mid-bush romp!!)

Fact sheets can be found here:
Funnel-web spiders

I am not yet in Oz myself yet but we have just decided to go for it (not necessarily a great time financially!!) but the presence of bugs and beasties was a key consideration for my wife!!
