Hi Ironside,

If you are not intending to do a lot of camping - or going to Sydney (just kidding), you will probably not even see a spider. Honestly if they were that rampant I would not be here.

In fact, Cairns has very few spiders. I think the birds eat them all. True. I have lived all over Queensland. Brisbane is not bad.....but the more bushy you get, the more spiders. I left Central Queensland about 6 years ago and it is riddled with Red-backs and lots of others, especially on the coast, but you wont find them in your motel room or just wandering down the street.

Tell your wife not to worry. We do have dangerous creepy crawliies, we have beautiful scenery and friendly people. Watch those pesky tourists though mate.

Thanks for the article Quoll...........I have to say that perhaps some of the stinger attacks up here are not reported. We have them every week in FNQ. In fact, it was only reported on the news this week that more stingers have been caught in the "SAFE" swimming nets than ever before. I would suggest to anyone that swims in NQ waters to wear the recommended suit or stick to the pool.

Funnel Webs? Don't think so. However...

I have heard THESE live on the Sunshine Coast, amongst other places...

the biggest spider i saw was in Essex at our friends house who are now in Oz...it was huge and with attitude!!! and i am PETRIFIED of spiders... anyway we went to visit them in Oz last Sept and first thing i asked was how many of them they had seen indoors... none really they said!!! only a few cockroaches.. LIARS!!! we were sat in the lounge aving a few beers and talking about the good ole days we shared lots of and the story of the huge spider fron Essex cropped up... well our freind being the practical joker he is threw this big fuury thing at me and i freaked... like you do when you have aracnophobia and lo and behold as if it knew, the biggest ugliest huntsman crawled up the wall suffice to say i s**t meself and ran... wouldn't rest until it was well and truly DEAD!!!

We've had funnel webs at our place (and probably in the house too). Stay out of their way and you will be fine.
They have also discovered a new species of funnel web on the Sunshine Coast recently. But if you live in suburbia you will probbaly not see them-we are a bit more bush.
