Brisbane and mosquitos

Hi there

We are looking to move to Oz from sunny Gateshead within the next year or so and are interested in moving to Brisbane. My main worry is the effect of mosquitos as they seem to find me very tasty and I don't want my new life ruined by mozzies.

Is it also true that it gets dark quite early in Brisbane? as my idea of living in Oz is to come home from work and get the barbie on and relax with the family in the garden.

Any advice much appreciated.

Hiya
You better believe it ! cause they loved us too !!! My partner got bitten from day one so we covered ourselves with the repelant spray ,,but we just seemed to always leave a bite size area un-covered somewhere. In a shop one day i saw some repelent patches abit like nicotene patches ,,so we both put them on and i became a mossie haven as it seemed to attract them too me and i got eaten. It did put a big downer on things but obviously not enough to put us off as we are hoping to be out there for good by 2007. OH ,,yeah it goes dark about 6 every night but didnt cause much of a problem and it was great for getting the kids to bed early

hope this helps

Thanks Cal

What a bonus in getting the kids to bed early. NOw the light nights are here we're struggling to get them to bed when it's still light.

Re the mozzies, I suppose if my wife Andrea can put up with the spiders then I'll be able to put up with the mozzies.

We've just read your posting about your recent visit as we're new to this site. It seems quite a place from what we've researched so far but this info is straight from the horses mouth so its even better than looking at a load of different websites.

We've been thinking about going over for a couple of years now but have only just decided to do something about it.

Best wishes

Brendan

When my husband and i where in oz we travelled the east coast and spent loads of time in brisbane.
He normally gets eaten alive by mozzies and an ozzie friend from home told us to take vitamin b1 and low and behold no bites.
you start taking them a couple of weeks before travelling then take one a day. Vit B1 is thiamine and they dont like it, garlic works well too but its a bit stinky.

I normally take Vit B tablets once a day, and rarely have problems, but I ran out recently, and didn't get around to buying some more, until one day, when I got about 5 bites !

Vit B seems to work with some people but not with some others, but I think it is worth trying it :)

Thnaks for those replies - I don't think it would put us off completely but we're trying to consider everything and not just financial issues.

ABCDiamond - I have noted that Queensland does not have daylight saving and it has quite early darkness in the summer. How does this affect the lifestyle?

I think QLD'ers are early risers. Kids across the road from us are up and playing outside by 7am most days.

Evenings: Many people do still use outside for evening BBQ's etc with garden and patio lights.

It is different, but does come down to each individual and how well they can adapt.

For the information of others:

Queensland: No Daylight savings system like some of the other States do.

Brisbane 2006
The earliest Sunrise was
4:45 25-Nov-06 to 08-Dec-06

The latest Sunrise was

The Longest Brisbane day is in late December with 13hrs 53mins Daylight
The Shortest Brisbane day is late June with 10hrs 24mins Daylight

hi there
we have just been to brisbane area and yes it does get dark quite early but its just something that you get used too i guess, the ozzies are known for their outdoor fantastic lifestyle and believe us, its all true, plus some! so it doesnt seem to affect them, as for the mossies its true about the vitamin b1, also brewers yeast is very effective, i think its vit B12, very cheap as well!
Having been to oz, i'd honestly take my chance against the mossies rather than that prat clarke, the 1000+ law abiding asylum seekers (not) he's just released and tony blair and his delightful cabinet any day!!!

Dont fool your selves into thinking there anit any ilegals in oz..During my time over there it was common for home invasions to take place with gangs of viets storming into houses taking what they wanted...
