Gold Coast - what's it really like??

Hi, We are in the process of applying (waiting for Skills assesment) and have just (literally tonight!!) got back from a months fact finding holiday to Oz, basically to find out where we might like to live.

We booked a week on the Gold Coast which was intended to be a week's sunbathing after looking at Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. However, we have absolutely fallen in love with the Gold Coast area.

Is there anyone in the area who has made the move and can offer us any general comments or information regarding the Gold Coast??. I appreciate it's a vague request, but any comments will do, it would just be good to hear what people who've made the move to Gold Coast think, and how it compares with elsewhere.

Just to offer more information, we are both 30 with a toddler and another one on the way, due September. I am a Project Manager in Retail Construction and my Wife is a Youth and Community Worker.

Thanks for reading my post. Any comments welcome.

Have only just signed up today - but hopefully you are still looking for some info.

I have an Uncle who moved from Sydney to the Gold Coast after moving to Oz in 1996.

They love it there and whilst it can be a bit of a place to holiday not live, there are some nice suburbs. One to recomend is Robina. I visited last December and it's really nice good transport links etc

hope this helps !?

Thanks for your reply MissyAnge.

We stayed just outside Robina at the Radisson and it was lovely, we really liked the area, but were concerned that it was just because we were on holiday, if that makes sense. My reason for the posting was to find out if any members out there has any experiences of living in the gold coast area and what they think.

Hi Lee,

The Gold Coast is fantastic and is the fastest growing area of Australia and a lot of Aussies are moving to the Gold Coast and Queensland in particular from down south, mainly due to weather and slightly slower pace of life that Sydney and Melbourne. Please no not believe that the Gold Coast is just a holiday location because it certainly is not.

I have been here over 3 years and do not think I would ever leave the area because I have sampled most of Australia except Perth and personaly find this the best location for me. There are so many residential areas to consider and a lot depends on what is high on your list. Questions like, do you want to be very near the beach or slightly inland around the mountains or do you want to be on the northern end and near the motorway and closer to Brisbane for work for example. Housing prices vary on the Gold Coast and there are some very reasonable house prices as well as areas that you can pay 25 Million for a house.

If you need any info on any specific location on the coast, please p.m me and I would be glad to give you a suberb lowdown. :)

Tony

What's the work situation like in the Goldcoast and southern Queensland area? I'm and accountant in the holiday industry in the UK and looking to move to south eastern Queensland (no particular area identified as yet). I'll be giving a pretty good job up to come over and would be looking for something similar over there. Do migrants have difficulty securing management positions in Queensland especially when the have no experience in Oz.

Cheers

Hi Brendan,

The work situation seems from my point of view to be fairly active and there are always pages and pages or job adverts in the local Gold Coast weekend paper. www.gcbulletin.com.au My first reaction was to advise you to consentrate on accountant possitions in Brisbane cbd but after having a quick look just now at the Gold Coast market there seems to be quite a lot here too. Here is a link for a great employment agency that you may know of already but here it is anyway www.hays.com.au I am not too sure about the situation of the difficulty of securing management possitions once you are here, mainly because I am not in that arena due to the fact that I run my own companies and have not had to find employment as such myself while I have been in Australia but I am sure someone else on here can answer that question for you. :)

I have 4 kids age 3, 11, 14 and nearly 16. How is your older 1? I worry about mine. Although he wants to come, its just he is starting to work towards A levels in Spetember and then I am taking him out of this system to put him in the aussie educational system. Hope he'll be ok!

Hello Just joined Poms in Oz today I have lived in Perth for 8 Yrs. My husband has lived in Perth for 30 Years. We recently decided to pack up our things & try the Gold Coast...we have been here 6 months now, I have to say it is a holiday place & we've left the best place on earth (Perth) but it was something we had to do just to check if we were in the right place. If you want blue skies, white sands, clear blue oceans & rivers ( which the gold coast has not got) then you should try Perth. We are packing up, having a holiday in England for 4 weeks & heading back home to Perth. It is a great place we have 2 boys aged 16 & 9 and they can't wait to go back to Perth. They have done all the theme parks here the water parks, the zoos etc. There is plenty to do here you can have a good time...but it comes at a cost $$$. For a growing family I recommend Perth. If you do arrive on the Gold Coast between Dec - Feb bring your wellingtons & your pak- a- mak. We've just been through 6 months of rain on the Gold Coast whilst back home in Perth has been through 6months of 35-40C. Hope you find the right place for you.
