Young family heading for the Sun

Hi Everyone,
I don't usually do this kinda thing but after reading some of the comments you all seem really helpful and supportive. My husband and I (plus 20month old toddler) are moving to Oz in November. We are lucky because we have family out there but like many really have no idea where to settle . After living in London i don't really want to go to a sleepy town but somewhere more funky yet chilled out.Does this place exist anywhere in Queensland (Brisbane). Is there any suggestions from like minded people..?

I wouldn't say that Brisbane is funky as such. It's more a city with a country town kinda feel, similar to that of Perth and Adelaide. Of course, if you like the outdoorsy things I.e beach, fishing, sport etc then you will love Brisbane.

But if you're looking for a funky city with more career oppourtunity, great shopping, restaurants, concerts/musicals etc, then Sydney or Melbourne would be for you. Melbourne's less expensive & crowded than Syd, but it's weather isn't as good (4 seasons in one day).

If it were me and I had a young family and didn't mind the heat, I would choose Brisbane for sure. It's predicted within the next 20 years, Brisbane will be the 2nd largest city in oz, overtaking Melb, so no doubt the "funkiness" will improve as the city expands.
