Guest MADTOM
Maybe going away for 2 weeks early January. Has anyone made the journey from Melbourne to Queensland (southern) preferably inland there and coastal return? Any suggestions on where to camp or budget (but clean) motels etc and what places to stop? Or has anyone gone from Melbourne to Uluru and Alice springs (Not via Adelaide, Coober Pedy) or is it too hot that time of year:cool:and too busy!? Do you think there is no point heading up that way - don't want to camp in wet weather? :biglaugh:
janine the party queen
Wet season runs Oct---May. You run the risk of being washed away in monsoonal rains.

You could drive to SE QLD with no issue though it is the hot, stormy time of year but nothing like Darwin. You could take the Newell highway and then switch to the New England highway as it is meant to be a nicer drive. We enjoyed a stop in Parkes to see 'The Dish'. Stayed in a great little hotel/motel there which is No 1 on TripAdvisor for a reason: The Station Hotel. Along the New England highway you have Armidale and Glen Innes etc. I haven't done it yet but there is "The Waterfall Way" between Armidale and the coast that sounds nice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall_Way
Guest
Call in Temora for the aircraft museum maybe. Take the Newell Highway at least as far as Coonabarabran and Moree, countryside is beautiful. Parkes is well worth a look. Wouldnt go much further north than Goondiwindi or maybe Miles at that time of year depending on the weather forecast, you do run the risk of some pretty wet weather up that way if its evenly remotely like last year. Can't comment on accomodation too much, was paying up to $100 for motels but work was paying so wasnt too fussed. The Red Gum in Dubbo was good, tho i'd be tempted to skip Dubbo completely.......and The Palms in Biloela is excellent if you get that far North. The Newell Highway is in pretty good condition right through to Rockie, really nice countryside and some pretty little towns...but it is a bit of a high speed truck route, not especially busy, downright empty in most places past Dubbo, but some big HGV's who don't hang about. That said theres plenty of space for overtaking etc.

Coonabarabran is the astronomy capital of the southern hemisphere - people travel from all over to view the night sky from there. Should be well worth a visit and probably a nice spot to camp. That'll be why then :GEEK:
