Hi there. I live in Darwin - right down just on the edge of the city and we love it here. We have been in Aus for 1 year and Darwin for 3 months. It is a beautiful place with lots to do. It is a very laid back culture here - a bit like the greek islands but without the massive wave of british clubbers! There are plenty of shops and there is not much elsewhere that you cant get here - except perhaps Davy Jones/Myers and Ikea, but truthfully.... you can live without that! There are GREAT beaches and lovely lakes and pool to swin in, everything is so close and you can be just about anywhere in 20 minutes. I live in the bottom left hand corner in Darwin - Cullen Bay corner and work in the far north east corner in the suburbs - about as far away as you can go in Darwin and it takes me between 15 and 18 minutes to drive to work in rush hour :) There is a real multicultural feel to Darwin which we love. Good schools, adequate shops, fab beaches, beautiful lakes, really nice people and great restaurants. The ONLY down side of Darwin would be the "build up". Today isn't too bad actually which makes a change but between October and December - prior to the rains, there is a high humidity which can be challenging. Other than that - if you like wearing shorts t shirt and thongs daily and you call dressing up putting on a clean t shirt, like constant warm weather (its been between 34 and 37 every day for the last 3 months we have been here!) then you will love it and be very happy in Darwin :)
