Darwin help please.......

Having been in Victoria for 5 months we are now headed to Darwin. Know NOTHING about the place and will not get a chance to visit before deciding on schools and housing. Does anyone know anything about Marrara Christian College or St Johns Catholic School? Also looking at the areas of Larrakeya; Lyons (new) and Bayview and North lakes. If anyone has any information about these areas or schools i would love to hear. For areas I would love to be living in an area that has good sporting facilities - including public pool and a nice safe feel to it. Thanks. PS Moving up in July

Hi,

I lived in Darwin on and off from 1996 to 2001 but I didn't have any children so can't help you with schools i'm afraid. I think Larrakeya is a fairly good suburb. I also lived in Fanny Bay which is very nice but quite pricey. Also Ludmilla wasn't too bad and Stuart Park. I think these suburbs are all quite close to town so obviously prices are higher. Darwin is not a cheap place unless you live a bit further out say in Palmerston.

I really enjoyed my time in Darwin but I think it's the sort of place that you either love or hate. The weather is very intense. I am in Brisbane now and today I have had my slippers and cardie on but I didn't even own these things when I was in Darwin. July is a good time to go as it's their coolest time of year. Sept and October are the worst as it is the build up to the wet season. Definitely get yourself out to Kakadu national park. There is some amazing scenery out there and places to swim etc. I am hoping to go back myself for a holiday as I've heard it's changed a lot since I was last there.

I hope you enjoy it and hope this has been some help.

Jess

We too are due to be posted to Darwin, although not until the end of the year.

We have just had a 5 day trip up there to visit friends, check out schools and to check out suburbs. I must admit me and my husband both liked it. We will probably be living in one of the suburbs in Palmerston as OH will be working at Robertson Barracks.

Went round 4 schools up there including Marrara Christian School, which seemed nice but in the end we will hopefully be sending our kids to The Essington School in Rapid Creek. Apparently St Johns in Darwin is a good school as well but this is a catholic school and we are not.

Drove up to the Lyons estate but there was not much to see. 700 houses are being built up there and 300 of these will be DHA. Have heard that Larrakeyah is a nice place to live although some of the DHA houses are older but it is in a nice spot. They are also building news houses in some of the suburbs in Palmerston, and these also looked nice.

This is the best time of year to visit, just after the wet, but I am sure we will struggle with the build up and the wet but it is just one of those things. We went to the Mindil Beach Market on Thursday evening and watched the fabulous sunset! Well worth it!

Hope this is helpful for you!
