Hi to all
I will be in visting Hobart in May on a reccie. Any PIOs already there, it would be good to meet up for chat, on your views on Hobart and surrounds. To any of you considering a move to Tas/ Hobart, have you been before and what are your opinions (both good and bad) and what has made you decide on Tas over other Aussie destinations?
Also, is there anything similair to OFSTED, with regard to schooling in Tasmania.

Hi CityBoy, we are moving to Hobart fingers crossed, never been. We chose Tasmania because it just looks fantastic with loads to do outdoors, with seasonal weather. The houses look amazing. A great place for little kids. We are hoping to go after visa is granted to see for ourslves and validate it.
Cant wait to start our new life in Tasmania. Jane
We've just got our visas through (me, my husband & 12yr old son Luke) so as soon as we've sold our house, we cant wait to get over to Tas. We visitied last June and really liked Hobart and the surrounds. As for the schools we had a look round a few whilst we were over as it was a real consideration for us. I couldnt find much out in the way of stats for children my sons age over there (not sure that this isnt a bad thing) but schooling is differnt over there, children are more like children and not little adults, they have advanced classes for brighter children and in general state education is better (though we do live in Birmingham). There are so many lovely things about Tas - the main one is the friendliness of the people, I'm sure you'll love it.
Hi,
My husband and i are thinking about moving to Hobart. My husband is a plumber, and i cant seem to find any reference to jobs available to enable a fast track to Australia, also i would be interested to know information about the primary, secondary, uni schools is Tas as i have 3 kids. Do you know what the social life is like for kids, teenagers and 40 year olds?
Hi there Raphcat
I dont know about jobs available at the moment but I think that Joanna at the state department would be able to help. her email is joanna.jacobs@development.tas.gov.au also the web site T-change - for your sea change or tree change to Tasmania is a good site about information on Tassie if you havent already seen it.
Our son came over with us at just 16 he didnt go through the school system as he went straight to the TAFE college on a pre automotive course . He then got an apprenticeship he has only ever wanted to be a mechanic so he is really happy. The schools over here are good and I would have had no worries in sending him to school over here . There are a number of private schools and state schools. The primary ones near us in Kingston , Blackmans Bay , Margate, Snug are very good . Senior School are certainly well catered for as in our area alone we have several. single sex, co -ed. and church schools .
There are also colleges that students tend to go to after 16 before going onto UNI anyway all in all there is a good choice . Most I think have web sites.
He has had no problems in making friends and they always find something to do and that dosent involve hanging around on street corners. He has just been up to Launceston for the weekend to watch the drag racing, V8 Supercars are over here racing too. It isnt as expensive to watch these sports over here so he can go more.
There are golf courses, sailing clubs, every type of sport you could think of. Lots of music and music venues. Resturants ,theatres .
Thanks for all your tips, i will check out the web site and contact Joanna as you suggested.
I was also wondering, my eldest child will be 17 this year and is at present at college, he will finish next summer, will he be elegable to go to uni with his uk qualifications? Also he wanted to know if there is any night clubs in Tas and my daughter who is 14 wants to know if there are any dance classes in hip hop?
My husband and i dont know anyone in Tas as his brothers live in Brisbane and Sydney, so is it quite easy to make a new social life in your 40's?
Hi Kat.
We havent had a problem in making friends over here. Colin and I go out quite a bit and friends come round It is a very friendly place . Our son hasnt had a problem either and he wasnt one for change although he did want to come to Tas. There are night clubs in Tas they are in Hobart I am sure that there are some in Launceston. There are plenty of places that have live bands too. not sure if its my sort of music as its the stuff that comes out of sons bedroom not sure what sort of music either!.
He went straight to the TAFE and was only just 16 when we got here . and then went straight into an apprenticeship he only ever wanted to be a mechanic so he is so pleased. Plus he could learn to drive at 16 so that pleased him too. You would have to check with the uni about qualifications as I would think that it is different to College the web for Uni is University of Tasmania - Home There are a number of dance schools over here there is one in Bellerieve on the Eastern Shore, a couple in Hobart and one in Kingston where we live If you go to the Yellow pages web site which is yellow.com.au - Keyword Search there are loads of dance schools listed. There is one that advertises Hip Hop phone number for this is 03 62680864 and its called the Rythmic Dance Centre and it looks like they have centres all around . If you would like to email me via private email please do
