My wife and I and two boys are headed for Tas next year. I have been offered a position in Hobart, OH is a nurse. We originally were looking at SA and Victoria, but we both feel Tas has everyting we are looking for. Rural life, City life and beaches with good temperate climate. I will be over next May to meet prospective employers and would happily meet up with any ex pats already out there for a beer/coffee/chat.

Do try the state dept for economic development as Tasmania is always looking to add to the population and when you think that there is only about 450,000 people on the Island and its about the same size as Ireland there is room for growth. Anthony McHugh regulary goes to the Migrating Shows in the UK and he is really helpful as are all in his office. I will sort out the phone numbers when I get to work for Builders etc and send it tonight. Anthony McHugh at the Department of Economic Development his office gives out all the information regarding settlement. You can get his details from the Tasmania State gov site.
The Huon (Huonville ,Cradoc, Cygnet,) is a fruit growing area apples cherries there is also soft fruit. This area is about 30-50 kms away from Hobart . The roads are not busy a 20 car queue over here is a major traffic jam! The Huon is a beautiful fertile part of Tassie the Huon river runs through it dosent suffer too much in the Summer with water shortages. There are plenty of places to have homes with land and some great rides to take horses without going onto roads. I think the it has it all it is not too far out of Hobart but far enough so you can have a rural lifestyle at not a great cost. Driving through Kingborough, Huon you would think that you were in the Lake District with Mountains, hills and valley mind you it dosent rain as much!!
Kingston has everything that you need. We are not too far from anything , beach, sports centre, shops ( and there is more of those being built) House prices are reasonable in fact I think that they are the cheapest in Australia. But they are going up we have noticed a difference since we have been out here.
We do have seasons as I said which is good we dont get boiled alive in the Summer and we certainly dont get frozen in the winter. We do get snow on the Mountain and a couple of light frosts during the Winter. All in all it is a great place to live

Hi Sally, please forgive my rubbish geography, but is Sandy Bay in the Kingston area? When we explored around that area, we thought that once we had got through the shops on the high street then it seemed to get a bit too quiet for us. We have chosen Howrah/Tranmere because we like the modern housing and the 2 shopping centres and a good choice of schools. Do you think that Kingstons facilities (I really mean shops) are on a par?

The Eastern Shore (Howrah Tranmere Lindesfarne ) has the two shopping centres Shoreline and Eastlands and no probably nothing really comperes to Eastlands ,on our side of the river other than Hobart CBD, Kingston has more shops now with Channel Court being built up and there are a further 15 shops being developed along with with an extention to Coles Supermarket . There is another shopping area in Kingston Town . So I dont really think that there is a lack of shopping facilities although many people from our side of the river shop at Eastlands and there is another large shopping complex being built near the airport.
As for schools I would say that there is a number of good schools in the Kingborough area Kingston High is being demolished and a new school is being built near the sports centre which according to the reports it is going to be fantastic with it being new. Taroona High is another one, Calvin School, Southern Christian College The private schools are in Sandy Bay ,Fahan, Mount Carmel, and Hutchins for boys. As for the primary schools there are Margate , Blackmans Bay, Kingston, Illawara (Blackmans Bay)Taroona,
Sandy Bay is not in Kingston but is between Hobart, Taroona and Kingston. I suppose it is a little quiet outside of sandy Bays shopping area but it is changing There are a lot of Interstate people moving into Tas from WA and NSW and I think that the shops are changing to provide items that these people are used to and expect . As for Kingston apparently 40% of all new residents to Tasmania settle in the Kingborough area . Because of these figures Kingston is improving just taking a little while.

However, hoping to pick your brains further, are there any useful techniques or tips that you could pass along for finding a great job? Do Tassie employers look for anything in particular, or tend to bolt the doors & batten down the hatches at certain things that as an outsider we might not consider bad news!?
In the paper, I noticed one of the Headlines being about the continued unpopularity of Poms - just what about Brits makes us so unpopular?

Cheers Andrew, can I also ask you a quickie question. My OH is looking for Engineering work and has registered with an agency. They have advised him not to register with anymore agencies as they said it is not the done thing in TAS as potential employers could end up with duplicate details which would make him look desperate. We weren't sure whether this was the truth or whether is was a ploy by the agency to ensure they got the business. If you could throw any light on this it would be much appreciated.
