Hi, my daughter who's 2, other half and I are currently in the process of applying for a STNI 137 visa. Just finished TRA ready to send off and are in the middle of the STNI application. Can anyone help or give tips about the question regarding "commitment to Canberra". We have never visited, or have family or friends or an offer of employment in Canberra but this is the only place that may have us. We've visited our friends in Melbourne and flew to Sydney. Can anyone help with what to say on the statement of why we would like to commit to Canberra apart from the usual - its a better lifestyle, clean and higher standard or living!

Hi, I am also applying for 137, but to Tasmania, however the questions are more or less the same. You can and should include proves of attempts to get a job in Canberra, by printing copies of emails to Career One, attempts to talk to people in Canberra, by this forum for instance. You should also look at more specific information about Canberra, don't just say " because of better lifestyle" cause all states offer that. Try to dig informations on Canberra by visiting their tourist website. What Canberra offers to you that other state doesn't? How affordable is housing and how much will you be earning, schools curriculum are different form state to state, have a look on that too, you might find something interesting to mention on your application! All the best, I am sure more people will post here.

Hi!
Have just visited Canberra... Have written a post on the city. Have a look. See what you think. Any questions please ask.
Please note Canberra is nothing like Sydney or Melbourne (which is and always has been my favourite city) Sorry Sydneysiders!
Helen.

Hi, my husband and I are emigrating to Canberra on 2nd Oct. We are looking for accommadation for 2 months while we look for and buy a house. Can you reccommend anything for us? Our preferred choice (Carotel) is booked up and we are a little unsure what to do. Also do you have any ideas of the timescale of buying homes in Oz? We are hoping its quicker and less complicated than the UK!! Thank you
Hi Catherine,
My response would be much like Val's - do some internet research to show that you know some details about life in Canberra/ACT, rather than just entering general statements. STNI applications rarely fail, but if they do, it is because of dissatisfaction with this particular answer. (But you can always re-apply!). You may also choose to send some proof of research (i.e. real estate, emails you've sent to potential employers, etc) in hard copy to the STNI office to accompany the online application.
I'm sure you know this, but you can't apply for the State sponsorship until you've received the positive skills assessment back from the TRA...

Cheers,
H Kathryn,
Thanks for the reply I took Vals advice and researched through different websites about Canberra and its surrounding areas and what it has to offer. Emailed Schools and Jobs etc. The responses we received back I used as evidence towards my statement. My statement was about two pages long I hope this will be good enough.
We passed our TRA in Aug and sent sponsorship app at the end of Aug. Just waiting now, my agent said about 6-8 wks. Fingers crossed.
Hi,
try www.allhomes.com.au, they have details of renting & properties to buy. Be aware that Floriade is going on at the moment in Canberra,(runs mid september to mid October), John has been lucky to find a flat to rent at a reasonable rate. We have been told that rent goes up quite a bit during Floriade and accomodation is scarce at the moment. When I went on holiday in June there seemed to be a problem finding acommodation on Wednesdays too which I thought very odd! Sorry to be bearer of bad news. Anyway, he has been staying at Forrest Hotel & Apartments which is in the parliament triangle near Manuka. Not sure what the rates are though but you could give them a try as he has been there 8 weeks. address is 30 National Circuit, Forrest. ACT. tel 0061262953433. There is a website, google it and it should show up (dont know web address sorry). Can't help with house purchase timescale as we planning to rent for a while. Hope this helps one way or another. Good luck with the move. Helen
