Hi Lianne,

Yes we are in the same position as you and your family. Just waiting to here back to see whether or not we get sponsorship. When searching people have said to avoid Charnwood and some people have said Belconnen is nice. When searching Canberra there was a subject on disadvantaged areas such as Narrabundah and The Causeway. We are thinking about Torrens as an area to settle but we will probably check things out before we settle anywhere. Its really hard when you have not actually been to Canberra. I have only been to Melbourne and Sydney.

That's excellent news! Congratulations! I haven't actually submitted ours yet, I'm in the final stages of pulling all of the information together, any tips?? How much paper work did you send and what type of information did you include? Hope you don't mind me asking?! So what's the next bit for you now then? Lianne.

Hi,

For our supporting documentation I provided evidence of emails to schools and also emails that my Oh had sent to apply for jobs and register with job agencies in oz. Our statement was about a page and a half. We provided evidence of our mortgage statement and a letter from an estate agent providing the value of our house. Copies of qualifications, passports etc.
Our next stage is to fill out the visa forms and get them sent off asap. I find that I am repeating myself on these forms though.

When do you hope to get yours sent off? What line of work are you in?

Thanks for the info, I'll add some additional pieces of info in now. I hope to have the finished information sent off by the end of this week. We are applying on my husbands qualification as a Printer. I don't expect to work out there (atleast not until the children are both at school). I've written the paper on why we want to go to Canberra and found this bit relatively straight forward, I'm having trouble finding job opportunities for my husband though! Where abouts are you from in the UK by the way and how/when did you decide to try for Australia?? Lianne.

hI there, just wondering how it is all going for you. My husband and I just arrived in Canberra last week. Just about to buy cars and hope to have a renatal house by the weekend. Once we get a little more sorted, ask questions and we will try to help! All the best! Pamela

Hi Pamela,

Nice to hear from you and sounds like everything is running smoothly for you. We received sponsorship last week and it only took 5 weeks. Its all seems pretty quick not at all what I expected. We are now at the last stage just filling in our visa forms. The closer it gets the more daunting it is and exciting. I do appreciate its a very busy time for you so just let me know when your settled so I can ask my list of questions! Only joking ha ha

Take care

Catherine

Glad to see more Poms coming to Canberra!!!

The best place to look for a house is www.allhomes.com.au - you will get a feeling for what is available. There are areas to avoid - others have mentioned Narrabundah and Charnwood and Richardson also sometimes gets a bad press but nowhere is absolutely awful and even in those suburbs there are some really nice houses and good neighbours!

I am fortunate enough to live in the Inner North (Ainslie) which has old houses on quite big blocks. The further out you go - Tuggeranong and Gungahlin - the houses get bigger and fancier and the blocks get smaller so it all depends on what you want. Inner suburbs are generally $$$$$ and the very inner city trend for medium density living is slowly creeping outwards.
