Lamb Chop Lassie
Hi I live in Tassie and have just found this site and posted on Welcome a bit about the state.

I have lived in Oz for 34 years and all over the mainland and Tassie for last 12 years.

Love this Place.

Moved down to Tassie to escape the heat,
it is lovely when you are young and carefree but as you get a bit older, can get you down, all that dodging the heat with airconditioning in car home and if lucky where you work, but for my hubbie, he worked outdoors and got sick of it.

Earlier poster who had returned to UK was a bit hard on the state.

Yes we have the oldest carfleet in Oz, and still dont have MOT but means you dont have to keep up with the Jones's and stick yourself with a new car finance all the time.

And NO to only electric or wood heating in winter as we have mains gas coming through and already in place in some parts. Also underfloor heating as well as off peak storage. We ourselves have gas fires, woodfire in lounge, off peak storage electric and do not feel the cold when it gets down to say 1 or 2c at night.

Can always pop on another blanket as opposed to having to run aircond all night when too hot say 31c as it was overnight in Sydney last night whilst here it was 12c.

We have Hobart on trial now for over a year and soon to go all over the Island, internet and phone calls (very cheap) via electicity network - only other place in the world with this is Washington USA,
so not so backward.

We have digital TV in most big cities like Hobart and Launceston but where I live on the North Coast right on the ocean it is due just after Christmas. Satellite PayTV though is already here and now a new operator who is cheaper than Fox or Austar.

1080 poisoning is being phased out thank goodness. slow but we have a Labor State Government at present - so work it out. :(

Come to that every State has a Labor Government, only the Feds are Lib/National coalition - thats aussies for yeah

Cost of living in Tassie is not that high that $35 = 35 pounds. No way Hosay

Some foodstuff is higher but depends on your style. Most of us still cook down here so takeaways not so plentiful outside big cities - vegies are great fresh and I buy direct from the farmer on a shed on the highway and half the price of the not so fresh in the supermarket

We are all into eating healthy and that means clean and green like Tassie

Logging trucks are a pain but they are about to be reigned in - should go onto the railway which is underused and off the roads if majority have their way.

That about covers the downside I read about, we are maybe a bit quieter than say a big city on the mainland, but have all the things you want without the crowds or the crime rate. :D

www.tas.gov.au is a link with information about jobs and some video's about the Island that having had a look, made me want to go see all over again, it is a very pretty State and well worth a holiday even if you do decide to live in the heat

Australia is a huge continent - we have spent all holiday time looking at it - cant understand why anyone would go abroad except for visit back to UK etc when we have it all here.

Hi Lamb chop lassie

Glad to see someone giving advice on Tasmania we are looking at Brisbane but I saw an article on Tasmania a while back and its still niggling away at me that this could be the place for us not sure why just a feeling i have.

One question I have though is my OH likes the sun when people say its like UK summers what does that mean rainy and miserable  or the hot days we get ... he wants it fairly hot. Any advice.

Thanks
Kaye :)

Kaye - it is hard to answer that one as what is fairly hot to him?

Right now currently temps are:-

Brisbane is 29C
Sydney is 27c
Adelaide is 33c
Perth is 32c
Alice springs is 41c

where I live it is 22.5c and along the coast 50 kms it is only 17.5c. Windy there so cooler.

Tasmania is an Island and I still marvel at the variation in its weather and temps.
Even along the coast at top of island, it can very heaps, Hobart is at the bottom and it is cooler in winter and hotter in summer.

Why - because the northerly winds gathers up the heat off the land as it heats up and so makes it hotter arriving in Hobart.

Whereas the same wind coming down off the mainland is cooled by crossing Bass Strait, so like water cooled aircon it makes living up on the northern coast cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Hope that makes sense.

We started off in Hobart and moved North.

Same thing happens on the mainland, the temperatures depend on the wind direction.

Wind off the interior desert is very very hot, and the way the weather goes around highs bring on hot winds off the desert say in Perth, WA and then lows bring cooler weather off the Indian Ocean - works just the same way off the other side for Brisbane, depending on just where the high is of course, highs are anti-clockwise, lows clockwise.

Humidity plays a big part too in how sweaty you get and in what temp. High Humitdity is lousy - and Brissie is just on the point of too high for me as was Sydney. Perth was low humidity in 1974 when we first moved there, then when his job took him over to Eastern seaboard for 3 years where it is very humid and when we moved back to Perth in 1982, it had started to become more humid and had got up to near 90 degrees in summer when we left in 1994 to come to Tassie, it is that which is the bugbear.

I actually dont remember being so into weather in England, it was usually just raining and maybe a hot day or two the in summer.

Maybe I can relate to just me. I cant stand it much hotter than 82F(27c).

We do get quite a few days when it is just around that here in Tassie but only a handful in summer when it goes well overup into the 30's thank goodness.

Most days in Tassie are sunny and warm in the low to mid twenties, just right. Winter is only time we get a few grey rainy days and we welcome them - sound silly - no we need some rain

Often rains at night when we are tucked up in bed - good as it waters the garden and then the sun gets up and shines all day in a blue sky- difference between mainland and Tassie, is we do see a cloud of two in the sky - white and fluffy and sometimes want to see black and rainy - see not only downunder but wanting different weather.

Tasmania and Victoria get snow on the Mountains in Winter, so skiing is there for those who like to ski. Ski lodges and all that alpine stuff like Switzerland.

OH can take a lot higher temps than me - up to 90F before he starts to get snicky.

One of the things we liked about Tassie is there is no heart disease for dogs down here and it is rife on the mainland, one of the reasons we moved from sydney to Perth Wa in 1974 was because of this, back then was only in Qld but has moved across as far as WA now, and we love our dogs.

We have a lot of Queenslanders moving down to Tassie - and from all other states, for the better weather, cooler. Not just retirees either. Lots of them though.

Prices have been pushed up on housing but still a lot lower than mainland.

did you have a look at the video's on the link yet?

Also because we have less people, and are spread all over the Island and not clumped up in a City mainly, our infrastructure like schools etc are not crowded and people can get into hospital far more quickly.

Hope that helps a bit

:D

I don't think I was harsh on Tassie at all, there is just no point in viewing places through rose-tinted glasses it only leads to disappointment when reality hits.

I agree that there is no need to keep up with the Jones' as far a vehicles are concerned - however my point was and remains that there are a lot of unroadworthy vehicles on the road in Tassie because there is no MOT. I had never seen a vehicle crabbing along the road because the back and front were no longer in alignment until I lived there. It was truely frightening and not an isolated incident. Tassie has a horrendous road safety record (considering the population) some of that is due to the poor conditions of the vehicles.

It would be nice to think all the logs would go by rail but we know that won't happen don't we. If the environmental disaster that is the planned pulp mill goes ahead the amount of log trucks is predicted to reach one every 3 minutes on the East Tamar highway. Gunns have admitted that more accidents are inevitable - most cars don't come off to well when they have been in a log truck accident.

1080 being phased out - pull the other one. Forestry Tasmania (FT) may have stopped using it but it is still rife on private land and if you look at some of FTs land you will see that it has now been registered to private companies as private timber reserves who will of course be using 1080.

Since I wrote my post the whole plantation thing has got totally out of hand. What was beautiful forest is slowly being replaced with a boring straight line monoculture. Clearing the old growth forest involves napalming and poisoning. Tassie is killing its own clean green image.

My comments on cost of living weren't wrong either. A CD that costs a fiver in the UK will cost around $5 dollars in Tas. My supermarket shop cost me around the same as it does here. As I was earning less in Tassie - (wages are generally lower than the mainland) this meant that the cost of living was the same or in some cases a bit more expensive.

This shouldn't put people off going there. Tassie needs people who care passionately about the environment to go there and save a unique place for future generations. It is still a beautiful place and it is not too late to save it.

Thanks for info on weather L.C.L the weather sounds perfect to me and the snow would be brilliant. I had a look at some of videos I was drawn to Hobart I have to say I think in a previous life I was a fish wife living on or near a working harbour has always appealed to me I love Padstow even Bridlington the harbours are great, I love the atmosphere. The other reason Hobart stood out is because we will be bringing my 2 sons with us and there seems to be a good swim club out of there my 13 year old very keen swimmer also soccer/football clubs. Also I saw there is supposed to be a great beach called seven mile {i think** is that right? Or can you point us in the direction of some great areas with good access to beaches?

Hope you dont mind me asking all this but I can never find much on any forums about Tas.

Thanks for the help so far

Kaye :)

Wardy - didnt get email of your new post so just popped to see if any new ones and there you were.

Seven mile beach is great - but so are many others.

We lived in Blackmans Bay and the beaches there, Kingston next door, are good too.

Many beaches all around - 7 mile is over the river Derwent from main parts of Hobart.

We started off in Glenorchy but this is not that close to the beaches and found Blackmans Bay/Kingston which I can recommend as being good place to live, 16kms to CBD and it took me 15 mins from closing my front door opening garage and parking outside my office. Straight run down a freway with only one other inlet with only a few houses anyway so traffic peakhour - well - lets say it took me from glenorchy straight into Hobart CBD 25 - 30 mins and a lot closer. When we lived in perth WA, lived 14kms from CBD and it took me 45 - 50 mins due to traffic.

Schools are plenty and good in BB or Kingston area - both private and state run.

Shops are heaps better since I moved
Every day see ads for new ones so instead of having to go into Hobart to shop - can now do it in Kingston as it has grown - due to popularity I guess.

Yep Soccer is good for kinds and adults too.

You can get Premier league on PayTV - we have just got second company offering and it is half the price of the original Foxtel/Austar group - so they are bringing down their price. All satellite. New one called SelectTV.com.au has BBC as well as European sports so good for anyone coming out from UK. FTA TV is short on showing real football (soccer) only get Champions league and FA Cup. World cup too of course.

Hope that helps. :D

Hi Samantha

Thanks for all the great info and the pm Tasmania does sound fantastic and the change in the seasons is great.

I have to give Tasmania some real thought because if it was just me i'd go tomorrow it sounds ideal. We have to think of OH job he works in industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning in hospitals, schools etc. But he is also a welder so depending upon jobs and whether I can twist his arm far enough back i think I could live in Tasmania.

Is there a big expat community there I suppose there is just can't seem to find many when looking on the forums it would be nice to know there was some sort of meets so we could get involved from the start, mind saying that with the kids football and swimming i'm sure we would get involved straight away no problems.

Glad to know there are some fantastic beaches I love to be near the water and the kids love the beach.

Anyway thanks for the replies who knows i may see you next year.

Kaye :)

Hi,

my name is Julliet and it looks highly likely that I will be moving to Tas with my husband, young son aged 5 and possibly my daughter aged 19 (she is being difficult cos she thinks their is little to no night life in Tas for her). My husband has been offerred a job in BMS and energy efficiency sales their, I am a college lecturer, we were wondering what life in Tas is like. We English seem to be a bit clueless about the island. I could certainly do with a few friends to meet up with and go shopping with, do you mind helping out? a winr bar or two wouldnt go amiss either.
I really would love some info about tasmania and our relocation, which if my husband accepts will prob take place in the next few months. We are getting valuations on our property in Cheshire, England and dont even know where is best to live or send our young son to school. At the moment he is in a mixed sex private school in Engalnd, so we would be looking for the equivalent in Tasmania, any clues as to good ones, or how I would find out in advance of our arriving?

Sorry to bore you with all this, hope we can speak again and even, who knows, meet up

regards
Julliet :D
