Hi there,
already in Tasmania great place to live and work, . Loads of new houses being built and there are a lot of interstate people moving in. We have all of the seasons yes it is chilly but there are blue skies even when its raining which it does sometimes!!!Havent needed a coat all winter. It is a really safe place to live and bring up children the schools are good, very little traffic, the locals are friendly, Houses are cheaper. great food, plenty to do. and see . You can ski in the Winter and surf in the Summer all within a short drive from Hobart.Tasmania is Australias best kept secret. And we love it

Hi, we're hoping to get to TAS this winter. We went over in April and loved the place. Even just being there a short time, we found the people to be very welcoming and very friendly. As Colin said, there is lots of property development going on and anyone involved in that trade in anyway I'm sure would do very well. My brother is a builder/painter/decorator and we've told him that he would have no probs getting work if he ever decided to follow us out there.

Cool North or South?

Hi Sally:

We're hoping to be in Tas this time next year - all things being equal, but have loads of questions!... I'm from a farming background, so I believe Tassie's rural/farming base is very appealing, for all that means. OH is involved in manufacturing/engineering but he's brilliant at organizing capital projects, amongst other talents & happily loves a quiet rural life too, so would work in Ag as soon as some stuffy factory! But near to beaches for surfing, etc... I understand the roads are pretty quiet, as they are in Northumberland, compared to other parts of UK, but how long does it take to drive places? we're looking to be within about 45 min drive of OH work, whether that be Hobart of Launceston area?
The area South of Hobart looks attractive, but I also like the look of the area N of Launceston - but wonder if it'll have to be Hobart region 1st for work... Currently we live in the middle of nowhere, chickens for neighbors - no pub, PO, nearest shops 10 miles, so we don't need to be in populated area! And we'd like to be able to buy something with some land for horses, stone fruit, etc. Is it easy to grow your own fruit & veg?! We like Season's - not great heat nor bitter cold & wind - so would N or S be best??!
Also, do YOU know, when you buy a property & have insurance, what kind of tax/duty are due on those premiums! And what is property tax like???
Anything else you can share about actually living in Tass would be greatly appreciated...

Cheers & THANKS MUCHLY,
Herbster

Hi again. If you come over pop in and see us We live in Kingston. Kingston is the fastest growing area in Tassie. Loads of new houses and a big ship builder has moved over here and is now in Margate agout 25kms awayfrom Hobart. Loads of jobs available for fabricators, electricians, etc It has moved down from WA because lack of trades and the increasing costs. We know a few builders around so can give you some numbers if you would like. there was 5 pages in the Mercury this weekend on job vacancies . Mechanics, painters, chefs you name it Tassie needs them. Anyway good luck it is an amazing life over here

Hi, just wondered what the work prospects were like for trades? Seems a great place for kids. Would love to buy land. The houses look fab.

Hi thanks, would you please give us the numbers, my other half is a highly skilled painter and decorator. Find it hard to find numbers for potential jobs in Tassie from here. Sounds an amazing place. What is is it like to live in Kingston?

Hi again
I will sort out the phone numbers when I get to work for Builders etc and send it tonight. Anthony McHugh at the Department of Economic Development his office gives out all the information regarding settlement. You can get his details from the Tasmania State gov site.
The Huon (Huonville ,Cradoc, Cygnet,) is a fruit growing area apples cherries there is also soft fruit. This area is about 30-50 kms away from Hobart . The roads are not busy a 20 car queue over here is a major traffic jam! The Huon is a beautiful fertile part of Tassie the Huon river runs through it dosent suffer too much in the Summer with water shortages. There are plenty of places to have homes with land and some great rides to take horses without going onto roads. I think the it has it all it is not too far out of Hobart but far enough so you can have a rural lifestyle at not a great cost. Driving through Kingborough, Huon you would think that you were in the Lake District with Mountains, hills and valley mind you it dosent rain as much!!
Kingston has everything that you need. We are not too far from anything , beach, sports centre, shops ( and there is more of those being built) House prices are reasonable in fact I think that they are the cheapest in Australia. But they are going up we have noticed a difference since we have been out here.
We do have seasons as I said which is good we dont get boiled alive in the Summer and we certainly dont get frozen in the winter. We do get snow on the Mountain and a couple of light frosts during the Winter. All in all it is a great place to live
