Didn't you read Tim's post? There is not an effective test for the human form of mad cows disease, that's why you can't give blood. Don't know why you were offended, surely you wouldn't want to inadvertently make someone sick. I'm just grateful that the Red Cross is so diligent.
You learn something new each day. A new mobile blood donation service has been set up near to where I live for this week only. So like a total fool I decided to call in today and offer to donate some blood.
After all we have blood tests as part of our meds to come here right. Well I was shocked to be told Sorry we can't accept your blood because your from the UK. Aparently it's to do with the mad Cow thing in the UK a few years ago. So I turned around and walked back home. I felt disappointed but more angry than anything else. I tried to do what I thought was a good deed and ended up feeling stupid. Just one of those things I guess.
REDDERS
I have to laugh at this one Redders I was a regular Blood Donor and ABneg which only 0.06% of the population has (It's very special blood) and I was refused to give blood on the grounds that I'm South African and that I might be carrying HIV, yeh right , they don't have a screening for that one yet LOL. They would not even take it for expermentation so that other "good blood " could be used for saving lives!
I this is very close to my heart as at one stage I spent 6 months in Hospital and a further year in and out and some body had made the effort to donate blood for me! Actually if it wasn't for these donors my DW and I would be dead!!!
You know what the funniest was about this whole incident? IT was in the UK!!!
thank you for the information. hopefully sometime in the future there will be an effective screening test for vCJD and we can resume our donations. until then we will have to hold on to it.
cheers

Hi Redders, We did have a thread running on here some time ago abt this. My 2 boys had blood transfusions as were born premature and we were told that they also would not be able to give blood. Sorry if I am repeating something already said on here but I think it depends on what years you lived in the UK.
But yes it is to do with the mad cow thing and hope I havent got it, what a shame we cant be tested for it as thats an awful lot of blood donors to be missing out on.
hiya, yes Ali is right it did happen to me redders, and it was the same van as you i went to!! but i was met by a very rude fella, who was very off with me, but like you i was shocked!! it feels like your trying to do something right but you get kicked in the teeth instead!! i complained about the fella in question, and the blood donor people explained about why i could not give blood etc, so after the talk with them i was fine but at the time i was so mad it was unreal!! but hey live and learn is what i say!!

Didn't you read Tim's post? When I wrote my post, Tim's reply came in just before mine was posted That's why I didn't read it before posting my response to earlier replies. I apologise for that mistake Elle.
Don't know why you were offended, surely you wouldn't want to inadvertently make someone sick I wasn't annoyed, just a bit disappointed and surprised having not experienced this before. I probably should have read up on the procedure and situation first and checked out the procedure instead of just assuming I could go along and do a good deed to try and give s drop or two of blood. I shoul have checked up first on the Internet or called Queensland health. I guess I' can be a bit of an idiot on times. Apologies again.
Thank God, No harm appears to have been done. As you point out I would not want to "make anyone sick" and thankfully the Red Cross gentleman there may have saved someone, because who knows, maybe I have a prroblem I'm unaware of.
I guess I'll just have to hold on until next July and give some blood to a blood bank in the UK, where past visits have proven acceptable, not that I'm suggesting the blood donation service in the UK is up to the standard of the ehhh, Australian service . All the best REDDERS
