We drove through Redland Bay on our way back to the airport, I agree with you 100% it has a very pretty coast line and seems like an up & coming area but we had lunch at the Redland Bay Hotel...OMG...we thought they were going to bring out the gimp any minute..LOL !! No offence intended, it's just our opinion...nice lunch though!

My friend has just returned from 7 weeks in the UK visiting family and I said to her "all these Brits want to move to Aus and I don't know why". She said unless its for the weather like me and me.
We both moved a long long time ago and things were not good in the UK in those days and we love it here but have to say.
If you have a lovely house
Friends
Family
Good income
Don't mind the weather
What is wrong with life.
Australia is nothing like England and we do have just the same problems, graffiti, knife crime etc.
I live in Melbourne and would not live anywhere else as I like the four seasons and its a much more cosmopolitan city than the others in Australia and its a very very nice life and we have been lucky.
Things are going to get tough around the world with the money markets going down the pan and of course if America sneezes and its already caught a cold this will affect everyone.
Come by all means but take of those rose tinted glasses and don't believe the adverts and people are not waiting with open arms for migrants to come. In fact some people believe they take jobs away from the locals and if things get tough here that will be a fact.
At the moment I believe that the gov is using migration to tick our economy along and keep demand going.
In my posts I try not to be too negative but I do try to tell people exactly what it is like and some like that and some don't. You have to be realistic being on holiday is different to going to work.
Some people can migrate and love it but others migrate for the wrong reasons and this all goes belly up.
If you are unhappy in your life and you migrate I think you will still be unhappy here. As its not wanting to move that is making you unhappy.

You talk a lot of sense Forgetmenot! I do see many threads and posts overflowing with, perhaps naive, optimism, which is sweet, but I'm often fearful that people don't really want to know about the stark or mundane realities of many immigrant's lives. Of course none of us have a Crystal Ball, to accurately predict our Futures, and for some people just arriving here with a heart full of Optimism & Hope will get them through the difficulties and unfamiliarity of their new Life, while for others all the research in the world won't protect them from Life's pitfalls - but it has to help To Be Prepared.
We are very persnickety in our house, keeping records of almost everything - that way we can compare like to like! I hate to confirm, but the weather is surprisingly chilly here during the winter, in our waterside rural locale there was frost on the grass morning after morning; peeps need to be prepared for that! (At the mo it's a right old tempest!) However, it's offset here in Tass by many gloriously sunny days which are very rare, even in summer in England! And, if you live in a properly insulated home (unlike us, presently!) then you should be able to cope with the winter chills - as U did in UK.
Food prices are def higher, we're probably spending 25% more on food, but the fresh produce and meat is of a very hi quality, & whether here or in UK, I never buy super market meat, or veg, so shop the same - but probably because we are off shore, supplies seem to be erratic and the choice & variety can not be the same as on the Mainland.
Having only arrived in Oz this winter,(but also speaking with experience of being an immigrant in USA for many years) for you ex pats that haven't been to UK recently, you will be shocked! Remember, being on holiday in a place is VERY different from actually having to live there. Direct Taxes in Oz are HIGHER! But in UK we have countless indirect taxes, on taxes, which is how they can afford an NHS. Which is where I have to agree with our Health Care Professional's post! But, it's HOW the revenue/£ is spent and resources deployed that are the issue - not the concept, which is fab. I can't tell you how many peeps I've known or heard of that have been into hospital the last 6/7 years & have caught something horrid, & nearly, or have died - or have had instruments left iside them during surgery, or been sent home with broken bones or fractured skulls, or misdiagnosed - even appendicitis missed... honest to god, I would NOT want to be sick in some NHS hospitals, & my father is desperate for new knees, but I know he's terrified of going in & getting sick. I used to travel 1,000Ks to see my dentist in UK, which did cost a fortune -+flights - but he was V good & finding such a dentist & getting accepted on his books is not easy. My last visit in May, just for filing down some teeth cost over $500 - not inc getting there! Obviously not NHS!
What might be helpful for potential migrants to Oz is to appreciate how the system here is different - if you want Good health care on demand, you have to budget for it, just as you would a new car or Plasma tv, or your pension! There is more onus on the individual to make choices about how they choose to spend & save their income - not having it dictated to them by some money-wasting bureaucracy. So if you want to spend all your hard earned cash on booze & barbies, you can, in the same way it's your responsibility to put some aside for a health care plan - if you value your Health! For people raised in a system where the Government makes many decisions for them, including how to spend their ££, it can be quite difficult realizing those decisions are mostly up to them now! One of the major issues with the UK is, that the Government take so much of your income, to spend as they want, that there's precious little left should you want private medical, or anything else!
Also realizing there is a BIG difference between actually owning something outright and paying for it on credit... which is kinda how some Governments have got into the mess they are now! Aim to be an Optimistic Realist!

People emigrate for all different reasons. Like those who emigrate to England like those from Europe.
We all hamper for a better life.
We haven't visited Oz, but do have family there. My Brother-in-Law emigrated 18 months ago and they've settled really well. We're emigrating purely for our Daughters. We want a better life for them, which we believe Australia has to offer.
I live in the South East, what was a lovely rural village, an hour outside London. In the recent years, the Goverment, have decided to populate the Thames Estuary with so many houses, that it's now looking like a concrete jungle (and I live in the 'Garden of England').
We have far too many houses here, and not enough jobs.
I don't expect to be financially better off, and I don't expect my life will be easier when we do emigrate, I am hoping I don't have to wake up at 4.45am in the mornings, not having to commute for 4 hours everyday to London and not getting home until after 6pm of the evening. I do hope that I can be the Mum that I've always wanted to be to my girls and always there for them.
Whatever reasons people have for emigrating, its personal to them, and I don't believe they do believe that the green is always greener on the other side, but hopefully a little better than what they have here!
Good luck to all of you who emigrate, and for those who have come back, at least you've done experienced it, you would have kicked yourselves if you hadn't.

You will get horror stories in every Country with health, it is like saying my grandad lived to 110 and smoked 500 fags a day.....for every negative storey about the NHS there are a 1000 good ones, its just what I ahve experinced but the NHS is miles better than what I have seen over here in every aspect.

What an insightful post Herbster. Thank you for highlighting the crucial differences between the 2 healthcare systems. I for one had not thought about it in that way(The way the money is spent/choices etc) -you're quite right.
