Holiday first or Not??

Hi all,
My family are hoping to emigrate in 2 years time when my wife has finished her teaching year at Uni and her probationary year as a teacher. I am a ships cook and have also been running the catering operation onboard as Leading steward for the last 4 years. We have many questions, which hopefully you kind people will help to awnser over the coming months. We have however been debating wether or not to holiday in Australia before we make the move. The pros are it will help cement the decision one way or the other but will also be a big chunk out of our savings, as we have 2 kids, 7 and 12 and would like them to be involved in the decision the total cost could be at least £7000. All comments will be much appreciated. Thanx, Frank.

Welcome to PIO Frankie.

Some people find it helps to go beforehand and others think it's best to go with no preconceptions as living in Oz is different to being in "holiday mode" (which I'm sure you already know, lol) It's all down to personal preference I guess.

We are going "blind" so to speak, although we're lucky enough to have friends who live there who have given us valuable insight into what it's like day-to-day.

I wish you lots of luck in your application process,

Best wishes

Sue xx

Hi and welcome to PIO,

We came over on a holiday before we even thought of emigrating to be honest, it was the holiday that made us decide to try to apply.

As Mrs T say's it's a personal choice, don't think I would have made the move if I hadn't come here first though.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

hi and welcome to pio

we were going over blind to start with but house is not sold so having to go over and validate visa's in one way happy to be doing this as gives us the chance to look around, and see the schools and work situation for oh........ but there is the cost had to get a loan out just to cover it with all the stress of the visa and trying to sell the house we all need a good break.

so at the end of the day its personal choice......................

good luck with everything you will soon be addicted to this site

In our Family I have been to Aus on holiday/work only for 2 weeks and my OH has never even been but we are still going.

I am sure a holiday would only cement your determination to go and it may be money better spent on financing your move.

The objective information you get from other people is more helpful than a holiday.

Hello!

If you had asked this three months ago, I would have told you that we are emmigrating without having visited Australia beforehand. However, after much discussion (and scraping together every last penny!), we decided that we would go and visit. We are off to Sydney on Saturday (YAY! - not that I'm excited or anything!), which is where my hubby is being moved to. We have two children so it is costing us a fair whack too. The reason that we decided to go was not to see if we like it (as most people who we tell seem to think), but instead to make Australia more familiar so that when we go on a one-way ticket, we have less to worry about. I am one of lifes worriers and had we not been going before-hand I would have worried about just about everything from driving over there, to the cost of food, to the flight, to the ... you get the drift!

This holiday, for us, is not going to decide whether we emmigrate or not. We ARE emmigrating - hubby has been offered the opportunity and we would be stupid to let it pass by. However had I not been a worrier we may not have booked.

So, as the others have said, it really is down to personal choice and circumstance.

Welcome to PiO - everyone here is going through (pretty much) the same things and are all a great support. If you are unsure about anything, or you have any questions, PiO is great because someone on here will know.

Personally I couldn't ever move anywhere without having visited it first - especially somewhere as far away as Australia.

Is there anyway you and your wife could go for 10 days and leave the kids at home? At least that would give you some idea of the reality of the area you'd be looking at living in.

Hi Whiteswan

You don't know how true your statement is, my friend! My great mate Lisa and her sister Julie (the only 2 children) both moved to Adelaide in 2006 with their hubbies and all 3 grandchildren.

They and I got The Lot from Lisa's Parents to start with. Australia was too far away for a visit. They couldn't cope with such a long journey etc etc. All they could see for themselves was a black hole in the UK without their family and they wouldn't discuss it.

We decided to target Lisa's Mum, and to leave her to convince Dad. They agreed to a six month visit - and LOVED it! They have since made a second visit and loved it even more. Now they are getting ready to apply for Parent migration and all their thoughts and efforts are focussed on their new lives and the new friends they have made out in Oz. It has been like a complete sea change. Quite amazing how Oz has changed their minds completely.

Enjoy your next visit. How long are you going for and where to, please?

Best wishes

Gill

Holiday or not??

Hi all,
Thanx for all your comments. I would go tomorrow without having been there on holiday, but the good lady is a bit more grounded than myself. 2 years seems a long way off but Im sure once we begin the visa process, selling the house etc the time will fly by.Look forward to speaking to u all again with my next set of questions. Frank.
