Still-a-dream! is on a distinguished road
Anyone living in Wynnum, or have any helpful info?

HI there, we are just looking into areas in Brisbane and through looking at some of your threads, some websites etc it seems Wynnum would be a good area for us.

We are a youngish family - me and my partner mid 20's and a daughter whos 1, so are after parks, safe areas, young families, playgroups etc. And also like the idea of the mini beach there. Also we are wanting to be kept busy where we go and hopefully not left twiddling our thumbs missing the UK. Also like restaurants/bars etc (but think we wuold have to go into Brisbane for this on the odd occasion??), or other like-families to socialise with after work etc (BBQS!) Does anyone know if Wynnum would be good for what we are after, are can you suggest anywhere else?

Also what area of Wynnum is best - looks quite spread out? And how old are the properties here, can u get new builds?

Many thanks if anyone can help, or good to hear from ppl with any advice.

I live nr wynnum in wakerley manly west area.
A lot of the houses are queenslanders the old wooden ones, there are also some brick ones around 20 years old. and nr the wynnum plaza is a new estate where you can build house and land. from there you could walk to the shopping plaza, maccas, gym.
Down nr the sea front of wynnum is the train station and town centre, I personaly prefer the plaza as the town centre feels a bit tired and daggy. but there are plans to revamp it all.
Its nice to go for a stroll along the front in the evening but I have been told by wynnum locals that dont go by yourself after 8pm at night as a lot of homeless hang out there and it is not safe, i havnt done it so i dont know for sure.
There is a man made beach where they have bought in some white sand, as wynnum forshore is mud flaps when the tide is out. They are building a massive sea water pool at the moment and it should be great when its finished.
Theres also a fishing jetty and childrens playgrounds along with a bike/walking track which takes you down past manly to lota, about 10ks in length. theres also elecric bbqs and picnic areas.
Land prices average the $300,000 mark, any existing property that has sea views would be around the 1 million dollar mark! other houses would average the $550,000
Theres a rsl club and a couple of pubs, between wynnum and manly there are a few restaurants and cafes along the sea front.
It takes about half hour to the city and cost about $6 for a day ticket.
There are plenty of childcare centres around.
I think there may be a website called our brisbane which tells you about all the different suburbs, along with photos.
I hope this helps you a bit

Thats great. Many thanks for that. Yeah I checked out 'our brisbane' but could only find suburds that seemed directly around Brisbane cntre or west of it.

Its sounds really nice and good for families.

Are you happy with where u have chosen to live or are there any other areas u would have liked to try? Also whats the deal with land prices/houses etc. Do you pay for land and house separately, and then sometimes together? As ive seen houses mentioned like that a few times.

hiya, when I was over for a tear in 2003 I lived in Yaringa St (which I think is like Manly West area?) I liked it, it's nice and close-ish to Bris to have a night out or day at South Bank, plus where I was was about a 5 min walk to the Manly west train station Also there were parks and the harbour and stuff where I used to take the 2yr old who lived with us....I thought it was a nice area to live in but it has probably improved since I was there!

Hiya, thanks for the post
Ive heard of Manly West - just down from Wynnum right? Thats good if its on the trainline also - I like the idea of being able to go to Brisbane shopping for the day - just pop the little one in pushchair and not have to worry about traffic and parkin. Live in Newcastle Uk at the mo and never get to go into town as its too much bother with the car and parking and queing in multi storeys, then rushing back for parking meter! Looking forward to a more laid back life for sure!

Are the parks there like play parks, or more like garden and lakes etc?

I grew up in this area and went to Wynnum High School - that was a while ago now!

Anyway, I think Wynnum is a great place with an excellent foreshore to stroll along. Not sure how many cafes are there now, but the fish n chips shops and ice cream places were great. Next door along the coast is Manly which is lovely as well (great Marina - if you're into boating, this is definitely the place for you), and Manly West is a suburban type area a mile or two inland. There's a train line running to the city from Manly, and Wynnum Central.

These days you see loads of families going for picnics along the esplanade with some nice parks. It also gets nice sea breezes which is so welcome is summer. The shopping area used to be very old fashioned with a high proportion of elderly people (driving through Wynnum main street on my P plates used to to drive me nuts because it was soooooo slow).

The place has definitely changed since I was a kid, but I'm sure it still has that magical feel that I remember it having.....so many memories.

G'day,
You could always look at Wellington Point (we've been here 10 weeks and love it), Birkdale, Alexander Hills and Cleveland. All very nice and have lots of good points. We have been in every street in Welly Point and Birkdale and there isn't a single street we wouldn't be happy in. Not a rough house in sight. Every where has it's problems, but we have friends who have lived here for 4+ years and wouldn't live anywhere else. We've been into Manly/Wynnum a couple of times and it is well spread out and looks a bit tired in places (I'm being polite), although the walk along the prom and marina is great. If you get the chance, have a really good look around the area. Like I said, we spent a full weekend driving up and down every street in our area and have spent quite some time in other areas as well. I really think it's worth doing. The websites will only give you the hard sell about the area. You can't beat people who have seen or know.
Good luck
The Tuckers
