Earls, I completely agree that the warts and all approach is necessary, and I for one am grateful for some of the "negative" threads on here. I love the UK (as I said in my OP) but am rather fed up of the weather here "oop North" at the moment.
I'm not saying Oz is superior to the UK, but I'd still like to try it.
Anyway, hurry up back over here, I've got you booked in for babysitting duties for the last 3 weeks of August!!!

I have to say that quite a few of you are prone to exagerration on both sides of the argument.
That's certainly not true of Oxford; the park I walk round every lunchtime is beautfiul at this time of year when the plants are in bloom. It'd be sad if that really is the case where you live. However, every country has its worse parts and Australia isn't an exception to that.
so you think i'm exagerrating then do you well you must live in such a perfect place but here can not take kids to any park within walking distance. i live in what you call an upmarket area but further down the road is what is called a bit ruff, so all of them have trashed our park and hang around all day drinking.............. bully for you if can that is one of the reasons i want a better place for my kids ...................................

I didn't mean to call you a liar, if you were reading it that way. I know that there are some bad areas in England, but was just pointing out that there are bad areas of other countries too.
I know that I'm fortunate to live in a lovely town in England where the parks are really nice... I was just trying to make the point that the whole of the U.K. isn't broken as some people on here try to portray, and I'm sorry that your part of the country has gone downhill.
