Australian knife crime & stabbings

Hi guys, Sorry to bring this up the word, stabbings. I am probably going to be shot down for this post but its something that has been bugging me all weekend. With the recent news of 6 young people's stabbings in a 24 hour period over the weekend, not all in London, it has made me wonder how many stabbings there have been in Australia in the past week. In particular with young adults.

On doing a google search, the best I could come up with is stabbings in Alice Springs, mainly among abos, this was the news report not my generalism (date was April 2008). Although the report concludes that stabbing are down 50% due to tough action against drinking.

I am particularly interested to know what sort of knife problems they have in Australia, can someone give me some links to read be it news links or from other sources. See I want not genuine information.

I am not starting this thread to cause an australia v england argument, just purely for information, as I am forever reading that us would be pozzies need to take our rose tinted glasses off.

Thanks and please I do not want this thread to turn into an argument.

Plus the murder rates per 100,000 per year is 2.03 in the UK shows the true picture....the Daily Mail would have it we are getting bumped off by the thousands.

I suppose there's probably still quite a few guns around since the ban.
It has to be said, that as sad as it is that young people are dying, the majority of it is gang related. The same all over the world . I think the most shocking thing is that the age groups are getting younger. Lord of the Flies.
Peer pressure plays a big part, and it's difficult to see things getting any better in the near future. 20 teenagers in London this year, 50 in total, it's a bit grim.
I'd be interested to read the statistics, but they are often misleading.

Just to prove the media go way over the top...out of 100,000 in the 1.6 are killed in England and 1.25 in Oz every year.....just shows how the media make it look like we are all being murdered.

That's true, like i said, most of it is gang related and doesn't affect us. Stranger murder is small, but no less horrible. It does annoy me the fear the media like to generate. But i must say, and this is from experience, that youth aren't keeping themselves to themselves as much as they used to. They start on older people a lot more than they used to. Like some form of adult baiting. When i was young we used to ignore older people and just cause havoc amongst ourselves. Now they all want to beat me up!
As for the stats, i think if you take the whole of the USA, you'll find the crime rate is low. But in certain areas it's phenomenal, so country wide stats are misleading.

To get a better understanding of what's going on in Oz try one of the online newspapers and read it on a regular basis. The media like to exaggerate the world over, it sells, but at least you'll get a similar bias.

www.theaustralian.com.au
www.theage.com.au
www.brisbanetimes.com.au
www.watoday.com.au

You may also pick up tips on where to live, or where not!

Yes the UK media is highlighting the knife, gun & gang crime a lot recently but it's also fair to say that it's got a lot worse in the last year. People, especially young people carry knives not only to commit crimes & to protect themselves but also 'to look big'. The fear of prosecution is gone and so it would appear the guilt & realisation that it is wrong to take someones life.
The thing which is most terrifiying is that the young people carrying guns & knives today are the adults of tomorrow.

Great post Pinhead and well said. I have been reading the online newspapers but found them a bit boring as nothing ever happened. Will go back to reading them again.
