Things you loved in the UK.

For those missing home.
The United Kingdom countryside is gorgeous. Across the Vale of Evesham in the spring, the beauty of the Yorkshire Moors, the Lake District, the Cornish coast, the Severn Valley in autumn, we don’t have towering mountains, glaciers, or rift valleys. The English countryside is varied, but moderate and dependable. Just like English people are.
Even the animals that populate our countryside are the same. You don’t get malaria from our bugs. We have no poisonous spiders, and no large animals which can eat you. Our single venomous snake - the Adder - is only as nasty as a wasp sting (and I’ve never seen one, ever
Pubs - not expesive trendy bars. They don’t need to be all thatched roof or horsebrasses. They don’t need to be picturesque, but do need to be authentic rather than brewery-mandated “English Pub Experience”. They need a sense of community, a character behind the bar, some grumpy regular drinkers, real ale not nats piss and probably a resident dog.
Real British food can’t be beaten, . Take great cuts of meat, fresh vegetables like parsnips, sprouts, roast them all and lightly season, serve with a rich gravy and a pint of proper beer and you’ve got the best Sunday family meal in the world.
I’m always amazedwhen I read that in other, allegedly civilised countries, health care is based on ability to pay. God knows, our NHS isn’t perfect, but get this: if you fall sick in the UK you will get treatment of the highest possible quality that the NHS can provide, free at the point of delivery, regardless of whether you’re a millionaire or a vagrant. Now that’s a civilised idea.

Totally agree with this point Earlswood. NHS is 60 years old tomorrow. So in the media big time at the moment. To think we all get free access, to procedures that can cost the NHS thousands and thousands of pounds. It is quite amazing.

But how long they keep this service free is another topic all together.

The english countryside is beautiful. My oh has just come back home from attending a course down in Egham in Surrey. He had a lovely hotel surrounded by beautiful countryside, he said it was really lovely and could see himself living there, but there was one problem, everyone was bloody misreable.......

Out of interest Earlswood, when your contract ends are you trying another part of oz or are you coming home??

Hi

Don't know about 'free' NHS, we pay for it through National Insurance Contributions and the lucky ones don't catch MRSA from the filthy wards.

Cannot stand Oz any more...I find a lot aussies thick and soulless with many of them having gone through a charisma-bypass...the weather is rubbish for a good portion of the year and the standard of living IMO is not a patch on what you can acheive in the UK on the same income.

The coffee is good over here though

Sorry go off your original post a bit but in what way exactly. I mean australia has access to all the knowledge our doctors have, so what makes them 20 years behind compared to the UK.

I have been to visit a friend in hospital and found the wards filthy, he complaned about his care and was told by a male nurse "to **** off back to the UK if you dont like it"
I have beed to A&E 3 times and my total waiting time to see someone was 14 hours (I swear this is true) the waiting room was filty with blood and sick on the floor and no air-con..it was about 100f in there.

Okay fair enough, lets hope me and my family don't sick when we are out there.....I have read a couple of threads where they say nurses are not as professional as the uk. Last post on this promise, let it go back to the original thread.

What I did miss when I was out there was a proper christmas. just felt plain weird, maybe you do get use to it. I mean a Santa in a shopping mall, surrounded by fake snow when its 30 degrees outside.....whats that all about.....

arlene is on a distinguished road
Sorry but just had to say that in Intensive care areas in Perth the care is not 20 years behind the UK, that is not true. I worked in Intensive care in Perth and the standards were very similar. I also experienced waiting in Accident and emergency with my son and the service was again good. You must have had very unlucky experiences!!
Anyway sorry to interrupt!
Arlene
