I've spent over £700 ($1500) on my three for this school year, and that's all on 'voluntary contributions' for school trips. Although how they can be 'voluntary' I don't know as they make a big deal about the trip not going ahead if you don't pay.
Still, it's cheaper than home ed so I just write the cheques and try not to think about it too much!

I think I would be doing the same as you Gizmo, although you want your children to do well and get involved with school activities and getting picked by the scool as well BUT as you say it doesn't grow on tree's, I guess that is one thing we will have to think about as we have two boys.
Hope you enjoy the dance with your daughter.
Perhaps i will ask if they will do lay by for me !!! LOL
Not wanting to highjack thread.... and agreeing with always paying out etc... but can someone explain in plain english what 'lay by' is as i can't get my head around it!!

Hi Min,
Lay by is a bit like buying items from a catalogue as in weekly payments (although we dont have them here in oz) say theres a dress at $150 that you like - you ask them to lay buy it - put a deposit down say of $10 and you have by a certain date to pay it off - but you do not get the item untill its paid - to be honest i have never done this and would rather just get the credit card out sometimes if things are on offer it will state no lay buy or rainchecks,

You choose what you want to buy in the shops, take them to a special counter and 'Lay-by' them, this way you can pay off bits over a period of time, a bit like using a catalogue really only you don't get the goods first.
It's very popular over here especially at Christmas time.
Arh... thanks you two... i wondered why things said 'no lay by'...... now it's all alot clearer to me.... well as clear as it can be with my brain!!! lol
