I think moving here has got me out of a rut; stuck at home all day with three small kids, no job, hardly going out and seeing anybody. Here, I've had to make the effort to meet new people, as I've no family. Thing is, with much less amount of effort, I could have done it without moving thousands of miles. Easy to see that with hindsight!
I think the negative/realistic posts are valuable too, by the way!

I agree completely. The move can be a great catalyst for change, but if you arrive in Oz and sit on your arse waiting for things to happen then you’ll be waiting an awful long time. Being here is no different to being at home in terms of what you can do with your life. The effort you have made is what got you out a rut not the location. At best the location just forced you into making that effort. You can change career, move house, make new friends, take up a new sport, learn to dance or go fishing just as easily in the UK as you can in Oz. If you hate your job in Skipton, you’ll hate it just as much in Perth. If you spend every evening watching TV from the moment you get home until you go to bed then moving to Oz probably won’t change that. It’s certainly just as easy to change that in the UK as it is here.
Negative posts are just people bitching about stuff they didn’t expect or didn’t plan for. It seems about 90% are about missing family and friends, which is sad but should also be pretty damn obvious before you move half way across the planet. If you see your Mum everyday and have a best mate that you see 4 times a week and have done since you were 10, then guess what? You’ll miss them. A lot. Is what you will gain from moving worth that? Yes or no? The other 10% is generally about work/money and you can prepare for that before you leave. Check Aussie property sites from the UK and look at prices. If you can’t afford a place then don’t move or be prepared to rent. Contact recruitment consultants in the area you are moving to and ask them what the job market is like for your field. If they say ‘Haven’t had any vacancies for that sort of thing for months!’ then common sense suggests you don’t move to that area.

So true Jo!
I replied to a thread a week or so ago trying to say that if you are thinking of moving to Oz to change certain things about your life that you think ONLY moving to Oz can provide then just be absolutely sure that you can't do that in the UK with a bit of effort. I do love it here and knew that there would be struggles but like you, with hindsight realise that we could have overcome them in the UK.
I wasn't trying to be negative and therefore 'antagonistic' (as some folks seem to be implying ) just adding my thoughts about the whole thing. I also responded several times to a post last night in support of another poster who was just stating facts because there are (no matter how much some peeps will argue) other folks that think its the land of milk and honey. Programmes like 'Wanted Down Under' and the like I think have lead a lot of people to believe this is the case and I am given to believe there is now an ad running in the UK encouraging people to migrate to Aus? - If there is I don't suppose for one minute it will be telling folks about the difficult bits.
It so true that what is a negative for one will be a positive for another etc and this is how negative posts should be read. Some people have clearly settled comparitively easy, no great problems, which is fantastic, others have had a really difficult time getting going, in our case there has been a lot of pushing £$%* uphill and when it is combined with a 'bad' day in other respects its easy think 'god, I hate this country', but you move on, another day etc - all folks like me want is to be able to vent ourselves a little bit - just like all the folks still in the UK trying to sell their houses, get their visas granted etc do (I was one of those once upon a time), and feel the relief (in the nicest possible way) when you realise someone else is having the same hiccups - a problem shared....... The last thing needed is to be lambasted for that (just cos you aren't experiencing that) which is what is clearly happening now to lots of folks on here.
I wanted to come on here and offer help as and when I could as a result of my experiences in the whole process now that I am up and running on a computer again and whilst I hunt for a job. Yes I've not got a lot else to do at the moment other than job hunt as things are settling down OK, but I think I'll just give it a miss now.
So I hope everything continues to go well for those whom it presently is. I wish happiness wherever they are for those that are struggling either to get here or thinking about whether they have done the right thing.

I have no problem with people disagreeing with my "negative" posts, and I must say 99% of these by myself and others are light hearted. My gripe is with a certain few who seem to jump on us for having the audacity to tell things the way we see it and defend their precious Australia with such venom you would think we had broken into their house and curled one out on their new carpet.
Hi all
Hi all surely the whole point of a forum dedicated to moving or living in Oz is that people can come on here and get differnet points of views, opinions, and advice. That has to include both the positive & negative to be a balanced view. Life is not all roses as we all know and I do think that a lot of the neg posts are sometimes tongue in cheek!

The trouble is where do you stop - what one person may call negative I might think " no actually I understand the problem"
I don`t like sport, I hate it,it bores me to tears, so does that mean sport has no place on an Oz forum?? No of course not it, just means I roll my eyes and hit the back button if I inadvertantly look at anything about sport.
