Newbie Aussie Funnies

When I arrived in Oz many years ago, Some people from OH"s new workplace came round for a visit one sat afternoon.
Upon leaving they said "See ya later" (Aussie term for goodbye, which we did'nt know). We stayed in for the rest of the afternoon thinking they were coming back and we did'nt want to miss them! lol.
Some other Pommie friends of ours confinded that when they first arrived they were invited to a Bbq and asked to bring a plate. (Aussie term for bring a plate of food) Yep you guessed it they both took an empty plate! lol.
Just wondering what other funny things people have done when adapting to their new country and not being fully aware of the terms and customs.

I thought everone said "see ya later". It just goes to show how different everyone speaks in the UK.

I was most disturbed when they kept talking about blokes wearing their thongs.

ROOT is a word that has a totally different meaning over here....My sister-in-law was at work and was 'rooting through some stuff that had been left outside a shop in the shopping centre where she worked' somebody asked her where she'ed been and she replied "Oh me and old Bob were rooting out the back at some stuff". Needless to say everyone was looking at her in a funny way, till someone told her what it meant in Australia, so be warned...LOL

Had a laugh the other week about 'Clinkers' they are chocolate sweets, but didn't mean that to me!!!

There is a funny name for babies rubber pants, I want to say 'Pikelets' but I know that's not right, maybe someone else knows what they call them, not that many people use them now in this day of disposable nappies of course.

On our first visit to Aus we passed a pub that said NO THONGS - at that time I didn't know that thongs were flip flops and said to OH "I know it doesn't look nice when you can see them above their Jeans - but how will they really know"?

When buying our house the realestate agent was going through a number of items, and briefly mentioned the bats in the loft, OH and I were giving each other glances and wondering if bats were an endangered species here and if we'd be able to get rid of them - turned out to be insulation mats. She

Yes I am blonde lol
