MelbourneBen is on a distinguished road
Something you should do before leaving the UK

Im not sure if this has been mentioned on here before....but when leaving the UK you can claim some of the tax back that you have paid for that financial year. You just need to send your P45 along with a P85 form that you can download from the net to the inland revenue. My Girlfriend and I recieved about 2000 pounds between us which was a big help when we first arrived in Melbourne.

Thought id mention it as a few brits id spoken to hadnt done this.

Yes and don't forget to get your teeth nicely fixed up too .... Otherwise all that nice little windfall will be gifted to the dentist on your first visit for a check up in Oz!!

And don't forget to chase the Inland Revenue if after 7 months your OH hasn't received his tax rebate. I got mine a month after completing the paperwork, OH hadn't heard anything. One quick phone call on Friday - Oh we're sorry but we don't know anything about your form, must have got lost! So here we go again! What do you reckon the chances of claiming the interest we lost as well are???

If you carry out a self assessment tax return you'll get the refund into your bank account within 5 working days. Only problem is that you can only do them from 6th April after the tax year has finished (for that tax year).
