Exclamation Cost of living in OZ

Hi all

I watched a programme last night about a couple who were returning from OZ as the husband didnt like it. They said the costs of shopping (food, electrical goods etc) were double in Australia than in England - is that right??? I hadn't thought it would be that different.

Anyone know any different?

Sally

Thanks Karen

Thats what I'd thought but after watching the programme last night, I was a tad worried! What made you choose the Gold Coast for your OZ move? We are still debating where to go.

Cost of living

Hi

We were in Queensland last year for about 3 weeks. There were 6 of us 4 teenage girls and my partner and I. We were mainly self catering so went shopping quite a lot and as we were on holiday we didnt economise.

I felt shopping bills were roughly the same as they would be here dollar cost exchanged back to pounds. I thought that the food was better quality - especially meat but due to the drought in most places food - particularly fruit and veg werent cheaper than here.

The thing I found was the value for money if you bought food - we did three theme parks on the Gold Coast and bought snacks at all of them. The quality was great and the helpings generous - we didnt feel ripped off at all buying food as a 'captive audience'.

I dont believe that everything is better/cheaper/wonderful in Oz but I do think that when the sun is shining and the beach is beckoning you dont need so many things to make life worth living - least I hope so!!!!!

Helen

Hi Sally , we have chose the gold coast area as my oh is a panel beater and there are plenty of jobs there also it looks fantastic . just been converting prices the cost of living and wages for us will be similar as we have now , but over there is a healthier life style with lovely beachs and sun , were going for the outdoor life style . .... dont worry to much ... karen

You can point out anything you like Roxymusic! Lets hope things have changed lots since then then! :)

And I agree Helen, I'm hoping the sunshine will encourage living on salads and simple foods rather than the winter stodge food I'm craving here at the moment!

I agree with you celtic! My OH just craves all that horrid stodgey food when coming home from working in the cold all day. so hopefully will be eating more healthy - which i dont mind paying a little xtra for.

We have been told that meat is little cheaper and its just fruit n veg that costs a little more but you get better for your money - i wont mind

hi all, living on the gold coast there are no heating bills!! massive saving, when i think what we paid in uk. we are a family of four living very comfortable on one wage, we don't live the high life nor are we eating bread and dripping every night! things are not expensive, you can always find bargains on most things. also, you never need to buy a winter coat ever again!! there are far more positives than negatives.
