Hi, Just Wondering If Anyone Knows Whether You Have To Obtain Medical Letters From A Doctor About Operations E.t.c To Take To The Medicals Or Are These Requested Later, Dont Really Want To Pay For Any If They Are Not Required. It Would Also Be Helpful If Anyone Knows What They Actually Require Letters For, Is It All Operation Going Back A Certain Time, And Would They Need A Letter About An Under Active Thyroid.thank You.
I just got a letter from my Consultant with the dates I had my knee ops and that all was successful.
I also suffer with white coat syndrome and guessed my blood pressure would be high on day of meds so I paid for a 24 hour monitor and took the printed read out with me as well.
Panel Doc wanted both of these. (knee ops done over 6 years ago)
Also had to get a letter from my OH doc as he is on BP tablets but we didnt take a letter explaining why so we had to get one (cost us £47 for the priviledge) and take it back to the panel doc to include with our meds paperwork.
To be honest I would take as much info as possible and then as you are asked for it you can just supply it - might cost a few quid to get information but worth it in the long run.
I had a microdiscetomy a while back 1996 , with no ref letter when I came to Oz but told all . I had the medical in Oz and passed with flying colours ...........
I would certainly take as much information with me to meds as possible, just in case they ask you for it.
You have to declare all ops/hospital stays on the forms anyway, so if you take all the information possible and they dont ask for it, then its no prob.
I had a laparoscopy in 2001 and a tonsilectomy in 1996, I mentioned these on the medical forms - I didn't need to provide any futher information from my GP and I didn't get asked any more questions about them.

Questionnaire issued by the nominated GP for you to complete is the trigger. The GP will assess your form and if need be request further consultant visits. I had a complete hysterctomy 3 years ago and he insisted that I obtain a full report from consultant with histology. My husband suffered from gout 5 years ago and he had to undergo an extra blood test. An appointment was set up with a Rheumatologist recommeded by the nominated GP. They do not sign off the medicals until all requests have been met. It is a pricey business. Good Luck.
myself, i had a hernia operation, and had it corrected by key hole surgery, it is just a straight forward op, hundreds of people have it everyday, has anyone been requested a letter about this, my wife has an underactive thyroide which requires tablets for the rest of her life.
i was taken into hospital march last year had a stent put in as kidney stones and a few probs was discharged sept, i took a photo copy with me which the doctor's surgery gave me free, it just to prove that you are not still under the hospital.
i was worried as have problems for many years with kidney stones and as it happens a lot thought might be a problem.
but spoke to oz last night and they said medicals are all ok
My understanding is that they tend to be more worried about TB, HIV and Hep B we were tested for this because we are both nurses and OH has tats and is a requirement. I had to get some extra reports for a knee injury that i got 6 week before meds and post natal depression i had 6 years ago. This cost me £120 for knee consultant consultation and report, depression report i got one of the psychiatrists at work to do it for me so cost couple bottles of wine. I had to get copies of letters regarding an op my son had at 18 months. All of this was triggered by Panel Doc being over cautious but wanting us to pass. You may not need to get reports my advice would be to wait and see because it can be a costly business. I managed to get all the information needed back to the panel doctors before xray and blood results were finalised so everything sent off together.
Good Luck
